United Kingdom - Riding on pavements law and strange cycle lanes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Could someone tell me what the precise law about riding on pavements is?

Following cycle lanes in Bournemouth I'm bemused how sometimes a stretch of pavement will begin and end with cycle lane markings but have no markings inbetween. So I'm invited onto the stretch of pavement, and off, but as far as I can tell I'm not supposed to be in the middle which is a bit of a logic flaw.

There's been some local road improvements recently and they've painted cycle lanes across t-junctions, but not anything on the pavements along the main road. How am I supposed to use those cycle lanes across each junction if I'm not allowed to be on the pavement in the first place?

All wierd.

Thanks, Joe

Good idea about asking. Actually there's two councils at it, Bournemouth, and Dorset (for Christchurch).

Try this(clicky) (http://www.bournemouth.gov.uk/Residents/roads/rnm/cycle_routes.asp) site for info. Does sound odd to me.
