Bicycle Mechanics - Bottom Bracket - Expected Life Span?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I upgraded to a new Dura Ace ten speed drive train last April....now have 4,968 miles on the bottom bracket and it is now clicking which I am interpreting to be a problem. Have verified that nothing is loose. Should I be expecting a longer life span than this? Or is this "normal"?
If I should be expecting a life span of 5,000 miles +/-, than it would seem to me that I should be upgrading to a Phill Wood bottom bracket, or something of that caliber.
As an aside, I am 6'1" and 210 lbs, and am apparently very hard on bikes....my ten speed chains are always "all done" at 2,000 miles....I commute 24 miles R/T every day and usually do a 60-80 mile ride on 2 to 3 Saturdays a month.

I just replaced the bb in my Trek 6700 hardtail...a bike that has seen some hard use.
The bb was a low end Acera and lasted about 4000 miles before it needed replacement and was on the bike when I bought it used... the bike needed a full drive train replacement when I purchased it so that bb probably had a lot more miles on it.
The Dura Ace (and XTR) bottom brackets can be serviced / adjusted unlike Shimano's other cartridge bb's.
He has DA ten speed which is an external-bearing BB, not a cartridge.
IMO, it should last a lot longer than 5000 mi. Have you checked that it's tight? Any detectable slop? Maybe your pedals are clicking.

Kinda normal life from what I've seen. Toss in an Ultegra and ride on.
Make sure your left crankarm isn't cracked (you may have to remove it to check from the inside).
I had a creaking that I SWORE was from my BB, but it was the left crankarm, cracked....it was also dura-ace.
I think your BB should last a lot longer than 5k miles, btw.
Not sure about DA but I have over that on my used Ultegra ten speed stuff
