Hey y'all.

A couple of months back I stumbled onto these forums and started perusing the clyde threads. The before & after pics were truly inspirational. Eventually I dipped a toe in the water and put up one of those "what kind of bike?" threads. Based on the advice I got here I went out and bought a Trek 7100.

It seemed to rain darned near every day for a month after that, so the Trek was relegated to the garage for a while. Eventually the weather cleared up and I started riding it. Slowly & for short distances. I got a rack and some wald folding baskets and started riding to the grocers (1 mile). As that got easier I started riding around the neighborhoods and checking out the little shops along the boulevards. Most of my rides were limited to five or six miles for a while.

Yesterday, after a month of riding regularly, I thought "It's a pretty day. Why not ride into work? It's only eleven miles." So I did it. And at the end of shift I rode back to the house. On the way home I stopped off and had one of those foamy fancy coffees at a sidewalk cafe.

It was a hoot. And I'm seriously stoked about the ride. My ride to work was pleasant. When I drive I get annoyed w/ stop lights, but on the bike I'm generally grateful for them (get a drink of water). It was very cool to ride down the bike lane (narrow lane along the regular road) and say "Hullo!" as I pass by people on the sidewalk.

I didn't even feel all wobbly when I got off at the end of both commutes.

Furthermore, I got on the scale the other day. I was scaring the hell out of 300 pounds two months ago. Last night I stepped on the scale - 290! 10 pounds gone from my flabby frame!

I'm thinkin' I'm gonna be likin' this experience.

Thanks for the advice & inspiration, y'all.

Congrats. Feels good, doesn't it? :)

I've got a much shorter commute than you, so I've been commuting for a month, but only just got round to doing some proper 'fun' riding. I've lost 11 lbs since my last weigh in 10 months ago. Seems that a couple of months of eating better and 5 weeks on the bike seems to be having some effect.

Congratulations on the commute and weight loss. Before you know it you'll hate driving to work in the car.

Congratulations! Feels good not using that $3.50+/Gallon gasoline, too, huh?

I'm lucky, my commute is only about 3.5 miles. . . but, it's 400' downhill on the way to work, and a 400' climb on the way back, all in the last mile coming home. . .

Keep up the good work!

Congraturations on your start. Once you get going you will not want to stop. If you don't have them yet, do add some fenders (Either Planet Bike or SKS will work fine). This way if you run into a light shower an one of your rides you don't end up wearing road grit from head to toe. Also if you ride after rain has stopped there might be some puddles, with fenders its a non-issue, without... you are going to get dirty.

When I started last March I only rode if the weather looked good morning and night. After a while I some some basic rain gear and I rode any morning the weather looked descent. If I were to get wet on the way home I would not be that worried. After a few months I rode even if it did rain in the mornings. By the Fall I got some studded Winter tires. I wanted to be able to ride into November without worrying about some potential slick spots that can form with the damp Fall weather and temps hovering around freezing. Then December came and I found I could handle light snow. In the end I managed to commute through a Buffalo Winter. I NEVER guessed I'd be able to do that back in March of '07. I thought only crazy people ride their bikes in Winter. Now I AM one of those crazy people:)

Just take it one day at a time and see what your body is comfortable with.

Enjoy the ride,
André
