Bicycle Mechanics - Veloce bottom brackets

Hi, I'm thinking of switching my 2005 Bianchi Veloce Triple to a double, for a lot of very good reasons I won't go into. From my research, it seems this can be done without a new bottom bracket or FD, given that both the double and triple BB's use the 111mm spindle and the FD can be tweaked. So far, so good. But the Campy website says the Veloce BB was updated in 2006 : "the tolerances and geometry of the spindle have been optimized to obtain coupling with the cranks and an ideal chainline." Does anyone know if this means a 2006 or later crankset will not fit a 2005 BB?

They are the same. Go ahead and fit the cranks.

NB Campagnolo do make a 115mm BB for triples. If you have narrow chainstays, the 111mm should be ok. I think your Bianchi should fall into that camp.

HI i disagree with Acorn a little bit. The triple veloce BB is not symetric i believe and has a lenght is 115 and the double is 111 (symetric)

I would spend a little bit more of money if you want to go double getting the centaur 111 bb, is completely sealed as the record. The veloce looks cheap thats all :P

I think this guy is right: triples usually take asymmetrical BBs. Fortunately, those old Veloce square tapers can be had for cheap. Here's a link:http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.asp?PART_NUM_SUB='0210-15'

Actually, that link says: "111mm is for use with double and triple cranks with seat tubes smaller than 34.9mm. For 34.9/35.0mm seat tubes, use the 115.5 Veloce"
According to the Bianchi site, my FD clamp is 28.6. So it seems like I can just stick a double crankset on there and peddle into the sunset. Anway, Veloce cranksets are only like $35 on ebay, so I'll try it in the name of science.

oh wait, what about chain length? If I go from a 30/42/52 to a 53/38, will the chain still fit? Or would I need a short cage RD?

THe chain should fit, the RD should work fine also. Are u going to use the same cassette? Well i would test 1st. Somebody can tell you that it doesnt work but it does fine. 35 bucks is cheap :)

Yeah, if I have to change anything other than the crankset, I'll scratch the whole plan. But since the price is right, I'll give it a shot. If it doesn't work, it will be a good excuse to build a whole new bike around my new crankset, right?

The Centaur BB is prettier, but the Veloce is pretty robust. I have one on my rain bike. Super bang for the buck.

2006/2005 Veloce are the same is what I ought to have written. I think you are correct that the Veloce one is asymmetric for the 115mm because they needed to move the drive side ought a wee bit. But if you have narrow chainstays, like on a steel bike, you should be able to use the 111mm bb with the triple.

Also, you can run a double with a long cage derailleur with no troubles. You can actually run a triple with a short cage rear so long as you avoid the gears that ask the mech to take the most slack.
