Front derailer

This is not a tandem specific question but since the smartest cyclist are tandemists, I thought I'd tap the brain trust:

I inherited an older Vision recumbent single bike from my brother in law. The shifters were busted so I substituted some other rapid-fire shifters.

On the front derailer (3 chainring) it appears that the shifter has too much throw for the derailer. If I get the derailer cage lined up on the middle ring & I try to shift to the big ring, the derailer hits the stop long before the shifter has clicked into it's detent.

The cable attaches to the derailer arm about as far from the pivot as possible. It seems to me that If I could move the cable closer to the pivot, it would make this situation worse.

Is there an incompatiability between certain shifters & derailers in terms of amount of cable pulled per stop?

You don't say which derailleur you have, but attaching the cable over or under the pinch bolt can make a difference.

Don't have it here at work w/me. It is a lower end Shimano triple. I've attached the cable above the pinch bolt (farthest from the pivot). Seems to me that if I were to attach it under the pinch bolt, it would worsen the situation.
