DOH! :o That would be the ever popular HTFU...
But Future Total Force Units makes sense also. Under FTFU the plan would be to prepare myself for the future by maximizing the capability of equipment and balancing the experience levels of other team members on the chance we would meet in battle with him in the future. Actually I should stop there becuase I am only digging a deeper hole...

That reminds me, RX, you coming to Austin for the June crits on the 21st and 22nd? I know it's a long way to come for short races, but you could certainly do a couple each day.

My guess is probably not. Most likely taking a break from the bike and heading to Baja.

Shorter vacation, vacation after nats? If you're sweeping all three stages of a major stage race, you could surely give Thurlow and his crew a run for their money and maybe take home a jersey or at least a medal.

Wouldn't it be nice if they televised the Nationals!!

RacerEx already has one of them funny colored jerseys for the dirt this would just be another one for the road.

Thurlow, Meeker, et. al., will get a run for their money from the NorCal Specialized Masters boys like Metcalfe and Mick Hellman. They just won every stage at Mt. Hood plus 1 & 2 on gc. Kentucky will be the showdown I've been hoping to see between Amgen/Giant and Specialized, and it's almost worth going to Nationals just to get a front-row seat. Other luminaries signed up in the 45+ are Doc. Andy Coggan and blogger Mark Swartzendruber, plus dark-horse Janne Hamalainen from Oklahoma.
Josh, are you going to KY? Also, do you know anything about the Elite nationals in OC, like what the course will be?
Mark

My bad! Maybe it's because I just want one so bad. I've been chasing one for 20 years. I've got medals and jerseys from states, and medals from nationals, but no jersey.

Mark, I'm not going to KY. The timing doesn't work too well for me. I've been to nats the last three years and since it's going to be in KY next year I figured I'd take a year off and see what people think of the courses and such. The Elites being in OC factored into my decision as well. The timing is better for me and I don't have to get on an airplane again. I haven't heard anything definite about the courses for Elites.

Well, here's the crit report:
Flatted two laps in. Cut through the alley
Then you should have been disqualified. To claim a free lap, the rules require that you proceed along the course to the officials stand.
EDIT: Unless it is announced that short-cutting the course is allowed - see Rule 3D5(a).

He didn't get the free lap, go back and re-read the report.
Well in that case, he should have been DQ'd for short-cutting the course:
3D5. Free Lap Rule. Riders shall normally cover the distance
of the race regardless of mishaps and must make up any
distance lost on their own ability unless a free lap is granted
for mishaps.

That would have been the case.
Honestly drew, you'll go faster without the rulebook in your pocket.

I've gotten to race a bit against both of the NorCal guys and was at the wrong end of a tag team beat down at one event. Having a teammate or two in the race will definitely be advantageous, the course sounds like it's not super selective so tactics will probably rule the day.
I have nothing but respect for those guys BTW. I've learned a lot getting whopped on by them.

I think he's on one of those crackberry things like Lance had that alerts him whenever you type in his last name. If you wanted to drive him nuts you could probably just go to any bike related website, type in his name and nothing more...
Maybe we can all put his name in our sig lines.

Who is the Andrew Coggan character anyway? I'd google his name to see but I don't want to waste 3 seconds of my life on him that I won't get back. Sounds like a grumpy ol w@nker. :D
I was a flag football ref for a season (gawd, will never do that again). I remember they told us that the rules are like guidelines and not absolute laws. It was up to us to interpret and apply them as needed to keep the game fair.
In RacerEx's case the judge perhaps would've considered that no time or tactical advantage was gained(in fact the incident put him in arrears), and that the shortcut of the course was due to a mechanical. In fact it seems kind of similar to Lance's shorcutting the course at the Tour that year he bailed across a field to avoid a crash.
In any even I'm glad they let it stand as it lead to one of the best race reports I've ever heard. :)

I'm the guy who stole the Texas State RR and TT titles right out from under the noses of all the local hotshots back in 1984. :D

Since it was reportedly announced a priori, short-cutting of the course would have been allowable had RacerEx taken his free lap (which, as I understand the description of events, would have still put him one lap down). However, he didn't, which means that by short-cutting the course he in effect made up two laps. If you were the chief judge, would you have given him two free laps for one mechanical? The answer, of course, is no...
(BTW, part of the reason that I'm familiar with the free lap rule is that I once rode a couple hundred yards with a broken femoral neck to claim my free lap before going two laps down. If the rule were as open to interpretation as you think it should be, I could have just sat on the side of the road and pondered my condition instead of trying to pedal with my leg flopping around.)

I remember it like it was yesterday. Mick and I were at Studio 54 doing lines off of Grace Jones's stomach when Rubbell came over the PA and interrupted the dance mix of "Der Kommissar" to make the announcement. Mick jerked his head up and went "No f'n way!" Then Grace came to and dumped all the blow that was left onto Debbie's lap so next thing I know I'm on my knees...anyway then Liza went up and grabbed the PA to make a toast in your honor. At least that how I think it went down.
(which, as I understand the description of events
You didn't.
In short, declarative sentences:
Announcement.
Start of race.
Lap two, first corner, a flat.
Cut through alley.
Get wheel.
Field comes around to complete lap 2
Official directs me to rejoin at back.
That is all.

Alrighty - sorry for being snide. Shouldn't have done that without knowing a thing about you.
Now, as I understand the way things happened, Racer Ex had a mechanical, fixed it, short cut the course but still re-entered the race considerably behind everyone in it? Maybe I'm not as familiar with how bike racing is judged, but it seems to me that its reasonable not to DQ him? I mean even if I was competing against him and knew what happened I don't think that I would be upset.

I found 3 seconds and just googled this Andrew Coggan character, turns out he and some other guy named Allen Hunter wrote a book on training and racing with a powermeter. Anyone familiar with this and whether I should pick up a copy?
