Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - grinding on a fixed

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

seriously wtf. i can understand skid stopping, it ruins your rear tire, which is easily replaceable, but grinding? what are they grinding on that is easily replaceable?

I think people are grinding on the bottom of the pedal. I have never seen that grind guard before.

rugged looking
now that i think about it if you tried to grind only on the pedal your crank would probably hit anyway

Also, before anyone says it. It doesn't **** up your bike as much as you'd think it would. That being said, I wouldn't do it on a classic or anything Aluminum, but a bike with a $200 wholesale like a Surly, why the **** not?
Also, I'm working with Milwaukee Cycles to make a less-expensive Crusher in the near future. Updates will come.
And believe me, it's a lot of fun to pull off a 15' grind on a fixed-gear!

tottally gay? How about tottally not using gay as a derogatory term and tottally using the spell check.

so do you wax up the ledge before you do a sick session on it?!?! grinding on a chainring is bull****. why don't you guys go skateboard or something........i can't get over the fact that you will on purpose ruin your chain, chainring, crank arms, pedals just to grind a ****ing curb. this is not inovation, it's stupid.

They're not actually grinding on the chainring. They put a bash guard type of thing on the outside of the crank arms, with the chainring on the inside. The grind happens on the bash guard. I think it's kind of badass and cool to watch, even if fixed tricks haven't yet moved beyond the "awkward BMX" phase, as I'm now calling it. Eventually, there will be more and more tricks specific to fixed gear bikes. I think the time in my own life for waxing up ledges for sessions and breaking parts that are really too expensive for me to replace every few months is over (ended when I quit skating), but I'm happy to see others doing it, enjoying it and trying new ****.

Ugh.. Even with a sprocket guard you're still far more likely to mess up your chain or something else in your drivetrain while grinding, and on a fixed gear that's the last thing I'd want to do. Not to mention it's just plain stupid. I cringe thinking about what their chainstays must looks like.

Unless you have them on dial you're gonna mess up more than your chainring and pedals. I do them on my bmx bike and my pedals, sprocket, cranks, bb shell, and grindside chainstay are all pretty gnarly.

I'd rather be in BROOKLYN over sarasota.
And to me, that's all that should matter. Is that you're doing what you want to do, and having fun doing it.Some people just go way overboard with things in life, and act as If you have to live life and follow it by the rules. Get real abd live outside your small ass box some time. I don't ride fixed, but If I did, doing tricks on it would be my main reason for riding/riding fixed.
Same thing that can be said about people that ride track bikes on the road. It was built for the track, so why ride it on the road? It's his life, his bike, his money, he should be able to do whatever the hell he wants.

Flaco, thanks!
To all asking about bicycle damage. With everything, if it's done properly, you won't mess up your frame.

Now I'm not saying take your "bike with full njs except your aerospokes" out and try to grind it. But having a bike that you can LITERALLY beat to s hit and not care about is awesome. My Surly has been through hell since I got it and it's begging for more.
I won't even wheelie on my proper track bike and my 1950 Higgins barely sees the streets. It's all about having a bike for each of your needs.

I hope everyone understands that the bmx tricks came before the parts, not the other way around. Skating before skateparks. Banana seats before bmx. If people never pushed the boundaries of their equipment we'd still all be shuffling around on one of those fancy walking horses (http://www.jimlangley.net/ride/bhsivracbikelg.jpg).

wow. you are no fun.
I guess from what I said it could appear that way. From watching countless bmx videos it just seems so, well, pointless.
I would equate riding a fixed gear in that manner to riding a horse to work in traffic. Sure, you can do it, but given the circumstances it may not be such a great idea. Either way, I don't really care i guess. Not my bike.

Do you enjoy having to slow down and pull your bike up the curb one wheel at a time? Yeah, a fixed gear isn't made for bunny-hops, but I learned them and popped a few tubes doing it, but now I can get up curbs faster. A lot of people think trackstands are stupid too, but they're indispensable on the road. XC mountain bikers use wheelies to drop off things safely and get over rough ground--they're just as useful on the road. I freestyle on the weekends so that on the week days I have a bunch of totally useful tricks to rely on. And it's fun.

It is fun and it makes you a better rider overall.
I was practicing trackstands and backward circles last night it was super fun.

I don't really slow down all that much anymore. That video is from when I was just learning them. Now that ****'s dialed in, it's easier to hit it moving at a pretty good speed. Just like everything. Crooked nose grinds were a pain to learn when I skated, but once you get them, you just kinda stick them at any speed.
A lot of the stuff we focus on is focused on hitting **** in the environment. We ride to places and hit **** along the way. Like you said, the only time I really practice new stuff is by myself somewhere then I apply them to riding. I can't tell you how many times I've saved my ass through being able to control my bike better. Getting doored and having my handlebars x-up just to pull them back and ride away, getting sideswiped and foot-planting the car's bumper to maintain balance. Not to mention all the times I've bailed learning **** has told me how to fall.
All this makes you a better rider. When I first started really riding bikes. Not as a pre-pubescent teen, but competitively, I had nowhere near the bike control. I think no matter what bike I hopped on at this point, I could control it better than people who scoff at tricks. [except bmxs... I can never ride those things, I look like a bear on a unicycle]

you should try a street MTB if you felt a bit dorky on a BMX--I felt kinda the same way riding my friends BMXs, but a street bike feels way more stable. And you can hit bigger stuff! Although I'm kinda turned off it for the moment because my bike (used) came with a 6-inch fork and I hate suspension. The rigid fork on my fixie feels way better for leaving and hitting the ground, even though it's road.
Also to clear up my comment about slowing down for curbs was directed at the poster above me (edit: above my oriiiginal post), who said tricks on a fixie weren't practical...I was making the bold assumption that he never took the time to learn hops.

I love the damage on that thing, seems to hold up well.
Haha, there has been alot of effort put in to defend grinding a fixed gear and about the same amount denouncing it.
Grinds are one of my favorite tricks, I think skating, snowboarding and whatever else I did influenced that though. It's so fun to scrape across ****!
Also, I do 95% non-drive-side grinds, aka right on my bb shell predominately. I ground it flat, I have a massive groove/dent in my chainstay, my crank arm and pedal are ground flat.... AND I DON'T ****ING CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I built my bike to DO TRICKS!!!!!!! Not to get through the city, not to do anything but be good for tricks! Yeah! And I love it because it's SO FUN!!!
The end.
