Mountain Biking - GPS Unit???

Hi guys,

So I've been out a few times to my local trail. Some people have told me they get lost so I haven't really gone out too far. So my question is, what gps units are you guys using? I have looked at the Garmin edge 605 & 705 and also the etrex legend HCX. I'm not sure if I wanna spend the big price tag on the edges, but I will if the features make it worth while. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I have a palm treo 680 smartphone, but any palm based phone or windows mobile can run the app I use, which is pathaway. I had to still get an external bluetooth gps receiver which I keep in my back pack. This program rocks. I make my own maps using google maps. I record all my tracks and can then export them to google maps/earth. I can also use it to get back home in case I get lost.

I have been looking around as well and if/when I do purchase a GPS unit it will be the Bushnell Onix400 but it is on the pricier side. It uses satellite imagery to help you plan out a route or try and figure out where you are ...

I use the Delorme Eartmate PN-20. Like it so far. I think they might still have the rebate available, check out their website.

Cool, I've got one of those myself (actually an R8). It's awesome for trail mapping with subcentimeter accuracy.

Lots of my friends have the Edge 305 and they are having problems with signal in the woods.

I got the garmin 205 and don't really like it so I ordered the 705. Hope thats better.

When I go out on the MTB trails, I use one of my Magellan or Garmin backpacking GPS units. They offer more features, can be used other than for bicycling and are very rugged. If I was buying my very first GPS unit, I would be looking very hard at the Magellan Triton 500, which allows you to download the USGS topo maps from National Geographic. This means you are essentially carrying a paper topographic map in the GPS unit. Absolutely wonderful for locating and route-planning.

I run a Garmin 60Csx in a Ram cradle on my handlebars. Waterproof, auto-routing, and a pretty color screen :-)
