Touring - Alcohol in MSR Fuel Bottles?

I was just about to fill a couple of my MSR fuel bottles with methyl hydrate when I noticed the bottle says petroleum based fuels only - no alcohol or beverages. What is the problem with storing alcohol stove fuel in those bottles???...:twitchy:

I'm an alcohol stove newbie so if the answer is obvious my apologies....:fight:...:(

Um, i think the 'problem' is they are uncoated aluminum bottles and will both leach taste and hold residue. For potable beverages, a Sigg bottle designed for liquids - coated inside- or the french, triangular shaped metal bottles with the pop top lid...

Um, going to the website, it does say 'alcohol damages the bottles'. well, I haven't seen any problems. except maybe it takes off the MSR decals off the bottles??? let me go look.

Okay thanks - ya this is just alcohol stove fuel - not anything to drink. I've got the MSR fuel bottles already so I want to press those into service.

Thanks for clearing that up! I couldn't see how alcohol would harm the bottles, but figured it was worth checking into.

Sorry to break the bad news, but if the alcohol you're relating to is (or contains) methanol, you shouldn't use MSR (or any aluminum) fuel bottles:

"One of the drawbacks of methanol as a fuel is its corrosivity to some metals, including aluminium. Methanol, although a weak acid, attacks the oxide coating that normally protects the aluminium from corrosion"More details here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol).

It may take years to encounter any problems with the bottle itself, but the surface chemical reaction that will occur inside the bottle might yield nasty byproducts that will dissolve into the alcohol, which you'll then burn in your stove...

I've always found that the best way to carry methanol was in the plastic bottle that it comes in when you buy it. If you buy it in large quantities, you can use fondue fuel bottles.
