I had an ebay auction for a bike running with great momentum. 5 bids, 350+ hits, 63 watchers, 6 more days to go...

Tonight I get a message saying that ebay had taken down my auction because I used the words "Like New" in my posting. I was shocked by this.

It said:

You recently listed the following auction-style listing:

230251050323 - 2006 Cannondale Synapse Road Bike 58 cm 105 LIKE NEW

The listing was removed because it violated the eBay Keyword Spamming policy. The violation occurred when you included the following information in your listing:

LIKE NEW

We notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has been canceled.

Keyword spamming is the practice of placing inappropriate words in searchable text to draw attention to Web content. To ensure that members' searches produce relevant results, sellers are not permitted to put brand names or other inappropriate keywords in a listing title or description for the purpose of attracting members to a listing. Sellers can only include a brand name under certain limited conditions.

Sellers can use brand names or keywords only if they relate directly to the item that is being offered in the listing. eBay doesn't permit sellers to use unrelated keywords because they may confuse and mislead buyers.

Who knew? It would not have been as upsetting if I didn't have nice momentum. Has this happened to anyone else?

I grow weary of the online auction monopoly.

End of rant.

Sucks that your auction got caught up in it, but it otherwise sounds like a good idea. Keeps people from selling a Cannondale and putting "LIKE SPECIALIZED TREK JAMIS FELT (etc)" at the bottom of the auction to trick people into looking at it.

Yeah, I agree with that and the brand name spamming makes a lot of sense. This I actually appreciate.

But "like new"? That seems a bit ridiculous.

Oh, well. Will just need to repost. I think they don't charge any "relisting" fees.

Name spamming is rampant, but "Like New" seems like a completely appropriate description of an item with no visible wear.

I see so many postings with obvious keyword spamming that I am surprised that they killed yours. Maybe it is that it was in the title.

it takes one a-hole for finding one little thing in your auction and they turn you in.
i dont' think they pay people to police auctions and let the users do it.

due to the fee increases, i no longer use ebay
there's other places to sell.

I have had this happen to me. You can get away with it if you use "L!ke New", but that phase doesn't help in your search.

I didn't know "New" was a brand name.

I'm surprised your ad got pulled for that. Saw a clever ebay ad for a Specialized mountain bike:
"Took a Trek over Giant obstacles with this bike. It Felt great!

I wasn't trying to get hits. I was simply trying to be descriptive.

Do you really think someone turned me in? That's lame. This time I put the mileage in the title like so (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230252492267&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&ih=013)

I can't imagine there will be anything wrong with this one. I've been selling since 2001 and have never had a problem.
