…getting started with a consistent RAGBRAI winter training program, when disaster strikes me down.

My program involved (get the past tense on that?) riding the trainer in front of a TV and connected to the heart rate monitor. Over time my program was to include longer and longer periods on the trainer. After each trainer ride, there was to be a lengthy leg workout with weights...this is where the problem lies. After finishing the first session with my weights, I took my shoes off and one of the bar bells fell off the back of the recliner (that I had stupidly placed it on) and landed squarely on my bare left foot!! OHHH there was music to be heard! Now I sit here after a week with a very colorful (and sore) foot. I can't even get into my riding shoes! Oh well I had all the right intentions for an early winter program. Guess I'll have to wait another week or so.

Take my advice, use the weights and then place them on the floor (even if you think you might stub your toe on them), because the alternative ain't purdy!

Rest assured! I've had more than enough colorful foot artwork.

Another complication has arisen; tomorrow I have to march in dress shoes with the Local American Legion. We have funeral services for one of our veterans; I'm the one who usually presents the flag to the widow/family. It's a very honorably position bestowed on me, but it's going to hurt.

Okay, it's 10 December, I dropped the bar bell on the foot on the 3rd. In a couple of minutes I'm going to attempt to ride the trainer again. The foot is still sore, and I think a toe is broken, but hey, when it's time, it's time!

So wish me luck, here goes!

So, is the toe swollen and multicolored or did it pop? It ***WILL*** be very very sore for the next few days. I have dropped an old 9-track mag. tape on my middle toe once from about 4 feet. (I was wearing sneakers but still). My middle toe swelled up to about the size of a grape and it was one of those big huge blister that was very painful because you would feel every pulse of blood that went through it. It actually kept me up one night. After awhile I took a needle with a lighter and popped it and about a bucket of pus came out but the pressure was relieved and it felt 1000xs better.

If you dropped it right on the toe like I did, give it awhile and it'll swell up real big!! and the pain never went away til I popped it.

It is multi-colored, it is swollen but not like it contains fluid. I don't think the barbell hit the toe directly, but it is pretty sore to the touch. My riding shoes (Sidis) didn't cut it, I lasted about five minutes on the trainer and had to get that shoe off!

I guess I have to give it another week. :(
