Bicycle Mechanics - Cannondale bottom bracket noise

I have a Cannondale Synapse Sport with about 1000 miles on it and the bottom bracket has recently begun making a creaking noise. I took it into the shop and they said it was the derailer rubbing the chain and made an adjustment. now it creaks AND shifts poorly :)

I am taking it back in today, my question is: how long should the BB last? should it need repair/replacement after only 1000 miles of relatively flat riding?

That seems awfully quick for the BB to be shot under light load, flatland, normal riding conditions....

Two things:

1) Have them fix the adjustment that they, seemingly, did wrong, and

2) You/they should take another look at the likely source of the actual creak. Here's a couple of links to help with the pinpointing process:

It's usually just a matter of patiently removing, cleaning,
re-lubricating, and re-torquing fasteners until it quiets down.

Thanks, I plan on having the derailer re-"fixed" at lunch and I'll talk to them about the BB

aaahhhh, its quiet. the master wrench at REI took a look at the BB and began disassembling it right away. 45 min later its all back together, the derailer adjusted and I'm out the door for $0 :)

He said if it became noisy this summer at all, he would take care of it :) :)

Sounds like ... he needed to grease/anti-seize/teflon tape the BB threads and re-torque them. Not at all uncommon.

Welcome back. You'll have to find another way to measure your cadence now ;)

Yep, my old Cannondale has the same problem - wish I'd had a master mechanic, but instead I had me pulling the BB and replacing it three times to get it right. Lots of teflon tape and 3 years later = no creak.
