Commuting - The strong ones

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The more I bike commute, the harder it is for me to imagine driving to work everyday. If I drove everyday, I'd get weaker and heavier year by year.
Bicycle commuting does not make me feel like I have superhuman strength or endurance. It makes me feel more like I'm normal, and that car drivers are more weak, unhealthy, and unfit. It's sad as I watch this effect on my coworkers as the years tick by.
This is one of the main reasons I ride my bike to work, besides the enjoyment, the freedom from expensive car maintenance, the positive effect on my mind, and of course, not putting two tons of filth into the air every year.
Bike commuters are, in my way of thinking, "the strong ones."

I agree with you fully, and as I get older and older it becomes more and more clear.
I agree, people are calling me crazy for more and more things I think are totally normal, its the pu$$ification of America.

Not all car commuters are unfit. Some of them pay $1,500 U.S. or more a year so they can work out at the gym. They get to ride a stationary bike while looking at the guy/gal sweating on the bike across from them. They can run on the treadmill while staring at the nice pastel colored wall in front of them. No, not all car commuters are unfit, now, where's that "dripping with sarcasm" font?
"They can run on the treadmill while staring at the nice pastel colored wall in front of them."
that's gotta take a lot of strength of character. No way could I force myself to exercise indoors consistently like that. No way could i convince myself pay loads of money to do that, AND loads of money for a car. Maybe these people are the "strong ones"
(ditto about the dripping sarcasm-font)

My wife insists that we have 2 cars, for some insane reason( called children) ,so there is a big red monster that beckons me to climb into it any time the temp drops, or its rainy, or icey. I moved here from snow free Marin, in foggy Callifonia, three years ago, and have cycled more each year than the year before. If I resist the temptation to drive through a Minnesota winter, I'll count myself as Super Duper Strong!
