pretty sweet sauce.

808 (state!) calories total.

Being 6'0" and 135#, I could care less :D

I feel compelled to make you a sammich.

Seriously, I think my skeleton weighs more than that.

According to my HRM, i burn about 600 each way. 11.5 miles.

At 5'9" and 195, I don't get that. If I hit 170, I'm going to start eating more. :)

My commute burns about 1180 calories.

My non-HR monitor 'puter says I burned more calories going down the big hill than I did on the entire rest of my commute :thumb:

It also says i burn 286 calories per hour while skydiving. Which involves 30 min of sittign in a plane, 1 min of freefall which is just laying there, and 2 min of hanging under my chute while i fly it into a landing. Somehow i doubt i burn many more calories than sitting on the couch.

I used to weigh 130# before taking up cycling, which makes me the only person in history to GAIN weight from it. I have calves now.

I supposedly burn 843 calories. With the calculator I used, I lose .24 of a pound each day I ride. I've made this commute approximately 500 times.

I don't understand why I don't weigh 85 pounds instead of the 205 at which I presently tip the scales.

Or maybe it's the reason I weigh 205 instead of 325.

Sweet!

For me, for biking, it looks like a drastic overestimation of calories burned, at least based on past records of calories in and weight uh maintained...

1250 calories going to work and 800 coming home. So it takes into account my heart rate, which reflects the hills. So over 2000 calories, I should be leaving a visible grease slick behind me.

I need to set up a video camera. Maybe I am sleep eating.

It over estimates IMHO.

I will use 425 calories for a 7.5 mile (one way) commute as a guideline. I don't see how they can possibly take a 2 mile, 5% grade and treat it as a 2 mile flat, or downhill for that matter.

I have calves now.

:D Me too! I actually look good in shorts now, legs are 100% muscle from my hill climbs!

5'10" 160lbs - calculated 90 cal's burned, one way, for my commute. I don't think it took into consideration the 2 hills I have to conquer to get to my office... I'll fwd this to my bud - an adventure racer, that does 70 mi runs for fun, and see what he calculates...

It over estimates IMHO.Maybe so. It says I burn 1400 calories daily, but I have actually gained a couple of pounds lately...

Well if you're gaining you're probably overeating to fuel your active metabolism.

I've been eating a bit more.

And you can't really lose weight if you just have leg muscles :D you have to be toned to burn fat.

My gestimate is I am burning around 1500 or so calories on my 32 mile RT with a major and few minor hills. I am sure eating like a pig !

I only burn about 200 each way on my 2 mile commute, but daily, i estimate i ride about 20 miles, or at least an hour, so probably around 1500 daily.

And since i started biking, I've been eating a hell of a lot more. I'm hungry a whole lot more often now.

This doesn't take into account hills. Every day I go up (and down:)) anywhere from 4 to 8 hills. I think the hills take more energy than the rest of the ride, even though they are only ~75 foot elevation gain.

So--I think the calculator estimate is low!

I figure it at 350kcal for my 8.5mi commute. 700 a day.

edit: I used the bicycle calculator from the OP and it first told me I was going to fast for the calculator (it only allows up to 17.5mph) and when I fudged my numbers to get a speed it works with it reported 487 kcal x2 = 974kcal. Too high.

Then I used the activity calculator, selected cycling >20mph for 25mph = 559kcal x2 = 1120kcal. No way I burn that much.

I figure mine at 1200 figuring on a little polar HR cal inflation. Still, thats a Chipotle burrito brothers! Since I am trying to lose weight it is not a Chipotle burrito though. Once I hit 175 it may be (I'm 6'2" so that is my goal but I would be happy with 180, 194 now).

1700 per day, about. I'm starving. I'll probably eat over 2000 calories for lunch today. (Company provided lunch on Wednesdays.) Then another 1500 for dinner, plus some ice cream for a few hundred more. I eat to ride and ride to eat. Not losing any weight, but I'm slowly trading the winter fat for some muscle.

Putting fuel in myself is a lot more fun than putting fuel in the car. (Provided it's the right kind of fuel for each, of course.)

Dont mean to rain on parades here but some of those calculators are BS.

My friend had a Body Bug which she put in her weight, height, and it measured her body heat and heart rate ... and she burned far less actual calories than what the treadmills and online calculators all said she did.

Eat what you eat and what fuels you through the day ... Just dont take those online calculators as golden fact!

(egs, it said she should burn about 450 calories in her spin class, according to her body bug it was closer to the lower 300s.)

Many calorie counters are inaccurate. I wouldn't put much stock in them.
Typically, it takes an hour to burn 500 calories running. Cycling's demand is much less.

I've always figured 100 per mile on foot and 40 per mile on bike.

fwiw the only truly accurate estimate of calories burned would come from a power meter. Calories burned can be calculated back from watts generated. Everything else is weak correlation at best.

An our of running is more than 500 cals. I burn just over 330 running 2 miles. And that take about 15-17 mins depending on the pace.

Sorry, but it's highly unlikely you're burning that many calories. Using the 40 calories per mile rule of thumb, your daily calories burned is probably around 800 calories, not 1500.

There is absolutely no way you're burning 330 calories in two miles of running, especially at that pace. Your watch or whatever is telling you that is wrong.

How do you know how many calories you burn?

Andy_K
05-14-08, 04:12 PM
The problem with the 40 calories per mile rule of thumb is that it doesn't take into account rider's weight (not to mention terrain and wind). It's a very gross estimate. If I ride side-by-side with my daughter (who weighs 85 pounds), I'm going to burn about twice as many calories as she does, without even taking into account the extra wind resistence of my girth.

HardyWeinberg

40 cal/mile = overestimate; if you feel you deserve extra-credit, feel free to consider it a reasonable approximation. 100 cal/mile on foot is reasonable, if you think cycling really is >half the energy of walking/running, you need to downshift!
