Folks,
My hats off to care free. Personally I commute on my bike almost 100%. I still have cars because they are paid for. They mostly sit unused unless I have a lot to haul...

My question surrounds business travel. I have job that takes me to what I perceive as bike friendly places. Bay area and Sacramento. I am looking to find a way to take my next trip and not use a rental car. I was wondering if in these two areas if there is a bike rental company that rents by the week or daily. Is there anyone out there doing this? In the bay area, my offices are in San Leandro and San Ramon. I plan on spending most of my time in San Leandro. Once I was in Castro Valley and saw a bike rental shop. I will be close to the BART so that will be my long distance part of the commute and the rest will be on bike.

As for Sacramento, things are a bit more challenging because the office there is in West Sac. I can get there either by Cal Tran or car rental, but from the airport or train station, the travel is is bit more out of my comfort level by bike. I know of no places in SAC to pick up a bike. At home I know the area well but West Sac is not the most accessible place.

Linus,
I travel an obscene amount (250 days a year):( Bike rental places where I go are few and far between...if they exist at all. I typically travel by truck and then commute back and forth by Amtrak (when available) I usually get assigned to a 3+ month project. I will take a full sized bike with me and leave it. Sometimes in an office, or hotel that I stay at. I have been looking at getting a Brompton folder to make the travel portion of the trip easier. Bike Friday's are another good choice. The very few times I have rented a bike it was a less then happy experience. Most of the rental bikes I have seen are lower end MTB's or Hybrids, usually in frame sizes that don't fit me comfortably. YMMV

Aaron:)

Check with the local riding club, post on their sites. I had a bike (trek 1000) that I rented out a couple times. Once for a whole month to a guy here on a buisness project.
