For the heck of it, I picked one up the other day for $5.97. It has 3 LED's and what looks like a series 100ohm resistor. I powered it up at 11V and it draws around 30mA. I figure that gives around 70% efficency, so the resistor isn't that bad; about a quarter-Watt into the LED's for lighting. I think I'll put it onto my bike for a rear light, and see how it looks; but I'm guessing it has too little lighting to be a primary rear light.
