I selected the notify me dialogue in my control panel but I do not get the little pop up message saying I got a PM.

Pop up a box when you receive a Private Message?
This will pop up a small warning box when you receive a Private Message asking whether you want to view the message.

You may have already checked but do you have a pop-up blocker installed on your Browser?

I have a pop up blocker myself, so none of my notifications get to me. If you have earthlink as your internet provider, it could be preventing you from getting your PM notification.
It's all good for me- I'd much rather skip all the pop up ads I used to get. Sometimes, I felt like I was playing a video game trying to close those pop up ads as fast as they were popping onto my screen!
