Aww geeze. So the regular "Bike to Work" people come on....

I mean those of us who usually can't/don't do it.

I would love to, but I'm having trouble planning the 24Mi route without crossing any crime infested areas. If I only had the guts to ride on the Interstate...

I have a hard time doing it because between where I live and where I have to go there is a big ong steep incline, known as "the hill". Even roadies in full kits have a hard time doing it. If they dare...

I tried it once (never again) and it's just too dangerous. There are no bike lanes at all and I was getting blown off the road by the force between me and the big rigs. And to the right there is a far drop...:twitchy:

I decided I'm going to start AFTER the hill. Gotta hitch a ride there. But I'm doing it! :thumb:

Nu-uh, not me, nope ---- I'm taking tomorrow off from the daily grind of commuting in protest of having more bicycles on the road. Dam it, I had to do the head nod/wave about 20 times yesterday, my neck is sore! And I have to go faster now! Competitive Tude cannot handle looking back in mirror and seeing new bicyclist coming up fast behind me ------ kick it into overdrive and zoom off - then pull off into a parking lot sounding like a freight train as I catch my breath. Nooooo alll these new bicycling peeps are causing me stress and strain !!!

I have seen exactly 0 new commuters this week. Considering I only see a handful anyway, noobs are easy to spot. All the noobs are up in Cleveland where they can all ride with groups downtown and get free coffee.

It's amateur day! This will be the first one in about three years I will actually ride in. As a year round commuter I like to take one day off from riding. It might as well be the day everybody thinks I should ride. I hate being told what to do :D

Yes, tomorrow I'm riding to work.

I packed a bag with several day's worth of clothes and we'll see if I can stick with it longterm. Wish me luck :)

Nope. Three reasons:

1) Friday is my cross-town facility meeting day so I use Fridays to drive in and re-stock my locker for the next week.

2) B2W Day brings a lot of JAC's (more than usual) onto the roads, which means a lot of irate drivers.

3) I'm doing a 200Km ride on Saturday so I'm taking Friday as a zero day.

We must be across the dateline, it's not until tomorrow in WA. The bike-to-work dateline might be a latitude parallel but whatever.

too far, too scary. public transport blows, too.

plus, it's a garage where we work on people's fifth and sixth Rolls-Royce cars (the particular customer i'm thinking has over a dozen cars total - i'm not sure he knows how to walk, even). so i think it'd be kind of frightening for the customers.

First I have to meet a client in Parrish. (15 miles) Then on to Venice for a warranty issue at 10:00 AM.(40 miles) Back to Sarasota, (19 miles) then possibly back to Riverview (47 miles) by dinnertime. Not at all possible to do this in an eight hour day carrying what I need.

Total of maybe 121 miles, could be more depending on how the phone rings tomorrow. 8 hours into 121 miles equals 15.125 mph.

Sheesh!!! 65! You work in a public park area? Daa-aaam!!

I mean I live, ride and commute in the middle of a dirty, pot-holed city where most people don't recognise the face that I, as a bicyclist, am a veritable and legal rider on the street. I mean - to some of these stooges on the road I look at them and want to say Duh! - as they stare dully from their driverside window - cell phone in ear and all three passengers in the car looking at me totally clueless - they just don't know or most likely don't care about my rights as a bicyclist on the road.

Sorry - I get a little activated when some dumb snit has sooo obviously cut me off tonight - never looked left or right - never expected I'd be right up on his car... eh.

SOB's. I know this kinda rant belongs in commuting, etc. but I didn't feel like moving it. It gets so old.

I am, however, seeing more people commuting to work - which is good. Now some adhere to roadrules - and some - are- p r i c k s. They look like they are just having one hell of an unhappy time out there and BAH FUNG OH YOU!

Too bad. I'm trying to talk to some of these very obvious noobs and the good "hits" are like 1 out of 3 now of people who actually make eye contact and talk. Several of the new commuters I see just keep rolling along, jam a stoplight (nice - you make us commuters look great on the street doing that idiot), and I've even watched a guy on a decent bike, with panniers - and wearing a nice kit - bomb down the street - totally ignore me (hell ---- WTF - I'm just on that blue mtb I guess) - blow two stoplights - come to a stop at a major intersection - and instead of just waiting .... he stuck his foot back in his clips and wandered to the right a bit and zig zagged thru the heavy stopped traffic and circled around so he could go straight where he wanted to go.

Those people piss me off. Big time. I'm out there giving talks to local kids clubs, college orgs, outdoor expos and festivals, etc - whereever I used to have my displays (I stepped down from doing this this past year) and I had more people in front of me - lots of women too asking about bicycle safety - how to ride on streets - how to feel safe.

And I'm sure I stated this before here and so I shall stop. I get irritated about people who just don't care and who give the bicyclist a bad name. grr.

I would love to have more people bicycle to work - and safely. And I would dearly love to see more women in my city bicycle to work. I do not see that many women step out of their comfort zone where I live to do the drive - but I have been seeing more the last couple of weeks. Niiiice!!!

Ride safe everyone!

It sounds like a rough road to travel Tude. My condolences and thoughts are with you as you fight the battle in the urban jungle.

My commute is much simpler...but has its own perils. It's a 6 mile uphill ride, all on the highway. While you risk a wreck getting right-hooked, traffic whips by me at 65+MPH. There's a nice shoulder, but after driving the same stretch of highway for years, watching motorists swing into the shoulder and into the oncoming lane, apparently only half paying attention...it worries me a bit. Someone makes a mistake and I'm dead. I'd hope they'd at the least get a ticket if that did happen.

Sorry, it does sound like I'm comparing and contrasting, making excuses for myself. I don't mean to make light of your commuting situation. There's just that thought in the back of my mind every time I ride that stretch of highway. I may invest in a good mirror just for peace of mind, not that it'd do any good, but at least I'd have a better chance of diving to safety.

Tude -

Edmonton has the largest urban park system in North America and in many areas there are dual routes so that one can stay on the pavement or take the MUTS and in many areas we have some incredible singletrack on which to ride.

I often tell people I have one of the nicest commutes on earth and can take this same route in the winter as the city keeps the MUTS well cleared.

In the summer I often take my scenic commute as I can hit the valley in about ten minutes and then follow the riverside trails, MUTS, and singletrack without dealing with the stench of exhaust, cars, and scorching hot pavement and then, after climbing nearly 1000 feet to get out of the valley I am only minutes away from my shop.

This little ravine is a favourite place for me to stop on my ride home and where we usually meet up before going to do more serious mountain biking.

My new commuter... :D

I'm with ya. Many of my fellow cyclists have given the rest us who actually respect and follow the law a bad name- with the result that many drivers assume we're all a bunch of maverick *****holes. I'm not a law and order kind of guy, but dammit, traffic laws are almost uniformly reasonable and focused on preserving life and limb.

I don't know about up there, but down here in Philly, there are more cyclists on the road- must be sumthin' about those $4/gallon gas prices.:roflmao2:

Man, to think I nearly chickened out...

I was feeling nauseous (nauseating?), headachey and snotty this morning and nearly caved. The 32 degree temp outside didn't help, but since I have all of you for inspiration (and to let me know what a wuss I am) I went through with it....and beat my previous time by 7 minutes. :D I'll install a computer today to keep track of how I'm progressing. Thanks Foo. :)

I just finished the Rockville Maryland Pit Stop break down about an hour ago.
Even though it rained we had fifty riders and about a dozen walk ups..
everyone was in good cheer and many thanks to the local vendors for the breakfasts
( we never had that before)
coffee, smoothies, bananas juices. The city of Rockville took a very active part this year
I was most impressed by that.

Beautiful route to work, 65er. If I had that on my way to work, I'd never make it.

There have been times when I have almost failed to arrive at work on time... I have been known to leave the house at 6am just to get in a few hours of singletrack riding before the shift starts.

The new job is great as I don't have to be there until noon (gives me some nice riding time in the am) and get off in time to get in some riding which I will be doing today with one of BF new members who will also be commuting to work.

I biked to work today as usual. The thing that will make it unusual is that I'll get the chance to do most of it over again tonight. My daughter wants to try and find a decent route to her job from her BF's house, so I get to ride from his house to Kittery Trading Post and back home. At least I'll be able to ditch the backpack at home. :D

I did it yesterday because I have other places to be today.

I was planning on becoming a regular commuter prior to Bike Week anyway. But, not again. I discovered there are lots of things I didn't take into consideration before I rode yesterday, no matter how prepared I thought I was.

And I thought a 17 mile commute was for wimps but I discovered that is actaully quite far to do regularly.
