St. Baldrick’s Foundation is is a non-profit charity, based in the United States. The foundation raises money for childhood cancer research primarily through head-shaving events. Volunteers, sponsored by family, friends and employers, get bald in solidarity with cancer affected kids who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment.
The foundation grew from an event to a nationwide movement in a relatively short period of time. The name of the foundation is derived from the words Bald and Patrick - going bald on St. Patrick’s Day, which led to St. Baldrick’s. This network of over 200 hospitals performs cutting-edge childhood cancer research and treats over 90% of all children with cancer in North America. In 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation established the first St. Baldrick’s Fellowship to encourage promising new medical professionals to pursue pediatric cancer research as a specialty.
The foundation has found supporters across the world. Thousands of volunteers shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family. Generous corporate sponsors help cover costs, so a larger percentage of each individual's donation is directed to finding cures for kids. The reinsurance industry has provided incredible support with firms often competing to show their support. Other groups heavily involved include fire and police departments, the insurance industry and schools. Some of the supporters of the foundation include Sharma Family Fund, Nidhi & Deep Kumar, Mr. and Mrs. William McCauley, IT Xchange Group, Schreiber Family Fund, Doyle Family, David Disiere (http://www.stbaldricks.org/supporters/individual.html/) among thousands of others
