Bicycle Mechanics - Need help with Ultegra shifter

He Guy's really need your help
been away for 6 weeks on a work assignment and when I came back I found that one of my shifter looks like this. I life in a very tropical climate and close to the sea. I always try to take good care of my bikes wipe them down after every use and wash them regularly. Never ridden in the rain but on wet roads.
Can any one explain what's happen and how I can clean it your help is very much appreciated

Looks like corrosion caused by sweat from your hands. Diligent post-ride cleaning/rinsing would help prevent this. Don't know how to remove it. But it's only cosmetic.

That's a type of clearcoat. Happens over time. Doesn't affect performance, replace it if it really bugs you. Ride on.

Cool -- is that the new Shimano "marble-look" finish I have been hearing so much about? Reminds me of the classic "smoke" paint job on the late-80s Centurion Dave Scott "Iron Man" road frames...

I tend to agree.

You could try a fine (very mild) automotive polish that's made for use on clearcoat to see if you can remove it.

Looks like salt damage or galvanic corrosion. Was it leaning against something metal? If you sweat a lot I guess that could do it.

looks to me like its underneath the clear coat. Meaning, you'll have to strip off the clear coat first. I have no idea how to do that. Solvent of some kind. Once the clear coat is off, perhaps very lightly sanding, or maybe just a good buffing will improve it. Of course, once the clear coat is gone, being in your environment it may get worse........perhaps others here will offer better advice. I'd be afraid of making it worse.

Could be that your watch or wristband is affecting how much sweat gets to the shifter. Just because it's only one shifter doesn't mean that it's not a sweat issue.
