I would like to replace drinking Coke or Pepsi with drinking coffee. Mainly because of the high sugar based carbs found in soda, & I can't stand the taste of diet. But I still want the "caffeine fix". I know that some caffeine is beneficial. And coffee shop rides are popular in the bike club.

The problem is the acidity in coffee tends to upset my stomach, a lot. So how do I "tame" it and still be able to enjoy coffee? Are there certain brands anyone can recommend? Or does putting enough creamer and artificial sweetener do the trick? Are there other methods you can recommend that will work?

Thanks.

I find that you canned commercial coffees and a lot of your restaurint coffee's can be bitter( I find most of them brew their coffee to strong). You might try some of the whole bean coffees that are available out there and experiment with the strength that might help. I don't know if using cream or milk will help since it is hard for your body to digest the stuff it may aggravate the situation instead of relieving it. Have you tried tea your non- herbal teas can have more caffeine than coffee. Then again there is always chocolate :D

A 16 oz. non-fat mocha is my fave. Don't know if the extra ingredients lessen the acidic effects, and for all I know they may exacerbate them. My stomach is apparently impervious, so it's moot.

Ever had one of those canned supercharged concoctions such as Amp? Absolutely horrid.

Dark roasts apparently have less acidity than medium roasts. I find them to be more bitter, however. The additional oils that are released in dark roasted beans bother me more than the acidity.

tried choco-covered coffee beans? ( you chew em) can give you gas..but the buzz?? WOW. the gas thing is important tho- as you ride you can get a cramp- try about 5 first, the caffine buzz is way longer and more physical. I like em.

I'd agree with ngateguy on the tea thing. Some of the non-herbal varieties have a reasonable amount of caffeine in them (most black teas, e.g. English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast) and are much more pleasant on the stomach. Tea is also high in antioxidants, so is in general much nicer to your body than coffee or fizzy stuff.

As for the coffee: it's a slight catch 22. If you're really looking for the biggest caffeine buzz per serving, you need coffee brewed from Robusta beans. Unfortunately, Robusta beans are the most bitter and most upsetting to the stomach (and is usually the bean used in cheap blends and most instant coffee varieties). When you buy coffee, look for brands that are made from pure Arabica beans. Much less acidic and far smoother in taste, but ultimately lower in caffeine (closer to that of black tea).

The brewing process can also bring out a lot of the acidity. To minimize this, try drinking espresso brewed coffee (e.g. the starbucks kind), rather than drip-filtered (the crap in the office), instant or plunger.

Hi,
buy some good tea, and learn how to brew it. I like chai, and I like to make it strong. Btw, it sounds like you are a candidate for Pepcid. Get the 10mg size to start, you take it at nite. I take mine with dinner. Great stuff. Back to tea, I like Stash, Ahmad is great for the money.
A lot of the brands are overpriced. Make sure you try Darjeeling. I like brewing times of 3-4 minutes for most teas. You will need to experiment with each tea to find what you like.

Have a bagel (or donut) with your coffee to help neutralize the acid.

Coffee!
The drink of gods....well, of MV anyway. Adding a bit of milk or cream can help with any stomach upset (unless you are lactose intolerant).

Hey some people like their coffee dark and cold. I think 7 year old coffee would qualify.

A recent convert to Stumptown coffee's. I have not had acid problems with their medium roasts. Tastes as good as it smells!
