Touring - Schwalbe Tires for Denali Hwy

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I ordered some Marathon XR from Peter White Cycles in 700x40c and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they weighed less over 100 grams less than my current Marathon Plus 700x28c.
I'm riding across the Denali Hwy next month and I figured I'd be fine with the 28c (especially the bomber Marathon Plus), but after testing on some other gravel roads I decided to go fatter. The 28c were a little squirrley when I hit some bigger stones.
I'm headed up next weekend for a race/ride (http://akspokes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=348) so hopefully they arrive before I go so I can test them out.
I used 35-700c XRs on my LHT in Baja and loved them. I never bothered taking them off in favour of some lighter tires when I came home.
I'll be running a set of 26 x 2.0" XRs on the Dempster Highway this summer and my Big Dummy (http://www.viks-bigdummy.com) rolls on 26 x 2.0" XRs.
Great tires...
Have a wonderful trip....:D

I used 35mm XR's on the Denali Highway with no problem.

I'm going to use the Marathon Crosses (38s) this summer, I'll report back later, maybe, if I remember, maybe....

Your XRs will be great for the Denali. Hopefully much of your unpaved mileage will be pretty well packed down but there will be embedded rock. Odds are that some of it will be freshly grated and that's where the 40s will pay off. I ran 42c Contis on the Denali last year and could have gone smaller, but why? They certainly didn't slow me down.
Have a great tour and go there prepared for cold rainy days.
