Road Bike Racing - Interesting data point from a pro-triathelete..

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I forgot which website I got this info from from but is an interview of Jurgen Zack.

T: How have you compromised your training?

JZ: Years ago, I used to ride 300 to 500 miles a week with Wolfgang [Dittrich]. A lot of it was slow, averaging 18 mph. Now, I do about 300 miles, and I ride faster – at least 20 mph on average.

T: How easy is that on your heart?

JZ: Yesterday, I biked 60 miles at 21 mph, and my hear rate averaged 118.

21 mph, 60 miles at a HR 118?!!? I could be pegged at an average of 170 and average a smidge over 17.5 mph.. Damn!

www.kreuzotter.de/ is down so cant get any tangible supposition of the wattage from the info though.

He's on aero bars. It's probably ~150 to 200 watts.

Good point. Then again Lot of pro-tri dudes, train in on road bikes quite a bit. Peter Reid comes to mind.

I'm pretty much pack fodder but can ride 40-50 miles *on a flat* at around 20mph with that HR no problem.

By yourself? That is pretty damn impressive.

+1. When I'm riding at threshold, it's closer to 24/25mph (at least it was Tuesday on my commute home)

How fast can you go with both tires inflated?

My HR gets up to 118 just taking out the trash... or thinking about racing. Has a lot to do with age, other factors, I'm sure. All-day easy cruising HR for me is ~150.

Depends.... is your wife waiting for me at the end of the 50 mile ride? :P
