Training & Nutrition - Training Plan

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I apologize if I am beating a dead horse here :deadhorse2:, but I just can't seem to find anything that suits my liking when looking for a training plan on the bike. I'm new to biking (and the forum) and have always been a runner. Runners World has a fantastic custom trainer online and I would like to find something similar to use for biking. Anyone know of anything?

I'm looking to be an all around rider. I am definitely interested in some long distance work, but want to stronger and faster on the short rides as well. This is the closest thing I came to finding a decent work out regime (I'm starting on week 4) :

Mort82, I've browsed around looking for something, but haven't turned up much in the way of a training schedule (lots of other great info though). Can you point me in the direction of a thread that might help me out? :twitchy:
Should I post a link to google?
:D
I would imagine that we could train just like we have with running in the past. I've heard a general rule where 3 miles on a bike is approximately 1 mile on foot.
Maybe someone with a little less air their head could chime in for us. :D

When I first strated cycling, I just adopted ny running (marathon) schedule until I found out more about what worked best for me. It was similar to this:
MWF - 30 minutes
TTH - 60 minutes with 3 or 4 five minute intervals (speed work)
Sat - 1.5 hrs gradually building up each week to a longer ride reaching 3 hrs
Sun (back up day in case of bad weather on Sat)
Bad weather messes up bike training much more than running. So make this schedule flexible. The important thing is get milage in, don't over do it, allow for easy or rest days, and put some speed work in as part of the loger days. Also don't increase your milage in huge amounts.

Man by Boyfriend can be a smartass. It'd be great if he stopped ripping on me and actually provided some links.
Anyway....I've been doing an hour on my shorter days 2-3 on the longer end. Monday is usually an easy day and Thursday a day off. I am riding 15 miles on short days and looking at 40 or 50 for my long ride on Saturday. Thanks for chiming in StanSteven, that is helpful. :)
My training schedule is pretty basic. I ride about 3 or 4 times a week. On the shorter rides I ride as fast as I possibly can. If I can only do short rides (15 -20 miles) all week I just go out as fast as I can. I also do a day with hills - only hills. I try to put in a good 40 -50 mile ride once a week. I do a century about every couple of months.

I took a quick look at that training plan on kanbike and I have to say I don't think much of it. Too many low payoff riding days - lot's of 16 to 20 mile days. Starting out I'd suggest 4 days a week. one medium hard 15-20 mile effort. One day with some intervals or hill training. One day at 2 hours or so - mix it up between hills, longer intervals, etc. And one distance day - building as you go. As you get stronger then you can add a 5th day, I like to to an easier recovery ride after the long ride day.
This gives you a pretty solid mix of rides and without going to real periodized training still gets you better in a number of areas. In running terms I think this is a lot like Galloway's training plans.

I wasn't too happy with the Kanbike training either...that's why I came to all of you ;) Thanks for the suggestions, it looks good. I've been riding/running 5 days a week so I will probably stick to that, but the rest looks great!
