My mountain bike has been my main mode of transportation for the last couple years, but I just upgraded and now it's too nice to leave locked up around town, so I'm going to go fixed...but I'm a total noob.

I've been looking on ebay at wheelsets and I'm not really sure what the real differences are between wheels like "VELOCITY DEEP-V TRACK FIXED GEAR WHEELSET" that sell for $250 and "BLUE WEINMANN DEEP-V TRACK FIXED GEAR WHEELS WHEELSET" that sell for closer to $150.

We've got a Peugot that I know is worth converting and I'm willing to put a little money into that one (for a friend).

Also, I've got a Schwinn Suburban with horizontal tabs that I want to convert (gears and brakes are a pain in the ass right now), but are there reasons why I shouldn't? Why it wouldn't be worth it? I never see any similar Schwinns converted.

No real reason not to convert a bike unless you just don't want to. Anything is worth doing if you're actually going to ride the bike. As far as wheels go the Velocity cost more because they're considered a better quality wheel but the Weinmann wheels will do just as good.

I think probably because the suburban is sorta heavy. Most conversions I've seen are done on sweet looking/lightish older road bikes, so that's probably why you haven't seen any around. But there's no good reason not to do it. Pics when your done, please?

gears and brakes are a pain in the ass right now

If this is your first fixed gear i'd suggest you keep the brakes for now;)
