View Full Version : Murphy's law in winter

We are experiencing the full effect of Murphy's Law this winter. First, we are on a temporary water supply (a garden hose running to a temporary pipe lying on the surface of the ground) while the town relines the water pipes on our street. I don't think I want to know why they thought they had to do this in December. So far we have only been without water once, but that was for 24 hours. To keep the water in the hose from freezing we are supposed to keep the water running, not dripping, but running about 1/2 to 3/4 of full on. So after a week of listening to water run we are mighty sick of it, no trips to Niagra Falls are in our immediate future. Now we have gotten 20 inches/50 cm of snow overnight, and our boiler has decided that this would be a good time to not light. Of course, the repairman can't get here because they can't get their trucks out of the yard.

This is where I get to apoligize to Dan for having had a frenzy of Y2K preparation. We have used the water jerry cans he bought to keep emergency water in. The house is currently being kept cool but safely above freezing by the ventless gas stove he had installed. Hopefully it will be able to do that when the temp drops tonight to 14F/-10C. Of course we are waiting for either the electricity or gas to go out, as that is about all there is left to go.

End of whine.

The sound of running water is no longer peaceful to us. :D

I think we lucky denizens of the relatively temperate Northwest have much for which to be thankful. Hope you have no further misfortune! :(

Temperate...it's downright balmy here. My only jacket is $3 windbreaker, which I've worn five or six times this year. That's about all anyone should need, except those whose recreation takes them into the mountains.

I don't envy Jean Smith's position, though. Temperature does start to count once it gets below about 30 F.

Wow, I am envious. It must be nice to be able to afford a hose!

Around here it would be nice to be able to afford the water she runs through it.

The water police here would be all over you!

Yes, we have water police who patrol for excessive run-off, watering on other than your assigned day, etc. And, the fines are high - as is the water bill!
