so, right now i'm living in the on campus apartments. i'm about to move to a top floor one because i like being able to sleep and that involves not listening people stomping and whatnot. also, there's this thing where the management seems to think i'm rich and wants to charge me $630 a month for this one bedroom of about 500sq feet i'm to move into. the other problem is that my current apartment would be $580 a month and that's about as cheap as it gets here for a single occupancy space (maybe $540 a month if you find an efficiency... which ain't gonna happen).

so, are there any good nearby apartment complexes (within 3 miles) of this place? i would rather it be on the DART bus line in case i have to endure a stormy day. i'd really like to pass this lease onto someone else.

i'm looking online and it seems other places charge min. $700 a month for a 1 bedroom? i could buy a house for that! is that accurate (exculding my own place)?

UTD Students get 10% off rent, and I think rent prices may be lower than what's on the website currently. If you take the long way to UTD, I think it's about 3.5mi, but that keeps you off almost all major roads other than Waterview for a short stretch up to Drive A.

the area is real expensive as far as housing goes, no good deals really.
the cheapest i found were the series of apartments on mccallum off coit, just north of target.
in my opinion on campus is actually a better deal. about 500 is the cheapest you're going to find, but consider:
#1: you have to buy or rent washer/dryers so that's an extra 20-30 a month
#2: you have to pay for your own internet service so i don't know how much that is, but it's more
#3: you have to commute, even though it's not far there are disadvantages which are outlined below

all and all you're going to have to pay somewhere in the 550-600 range. i think being 2 minutes from class is definitely worth the extra money, given that washer/dryer and internet is included (cable internet in the fall). i used to live off campus and i have learned that it's a huge advantage to be able to pedal back with time to spare when i forget something before class, and plus i save a lot of money making lunch at my house instead of buying food on campus (ugh) or pedaling to burger street or whatever.

i live with a room mate and pay 514, and i think it's probably the best deal for the circumstances.

it's cool to see another UTD person here, i just joined this forum. what do you ride? i'm the goofball with the old black sears road bike you might see no-handing it around campus from time to time (i also have a green schwinn that i am about to craigslist away). there are a few bikes on campus that catch my eye, it'd be cool to associate a bike to a... forum person?

OK -- the solution -- roommate.

1 bedroom -- 2 beds -- just like a dorm. I lived in a 2 BR with 3 other guys when I was in school. It isn't perfect, but it will save you tons of money.

Damn, critical blog entry there!

I'm a Townie Freak too except mine is the uber-kewl Shimano Nexus internal 8-speed - and it came with fenders.

Also, if you really want to compost - use worms. My Eisenia foetida can turn a pile of crap into filthy rich castings faster than you can turn your compost pile.

Yes -- I apologize for the blog entry. Wrong side of the bed. My sincerest apologies for being a dick.

Thanks for pointing that out so reasonably.

Your bike looks rad!

Thanks for the compost advice. We're just learning this stuff.

i've done the room mate thing before. i tire of room mates that play games all night long, have over a thousand dollars worth of liquor, consider talking loudly with their girlfreind at 2am studying, and fill my apartment full of roaches.

plus i have no room for a room mate. i have things i need to store.
