Classic & Vintage - Help with Vintage Campy...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have the frame, 70's or early 80's Alan (see pic) and want to ebay some appropriate Campy for it...problem is I don't know anything about old Campy components. What should I look for for this frame...Super Record, nuevo(?)...6 speed, 7 speed...?
Thanks for helping out the un educated!

Go to campyonly.com They will have all the info you need. Look at the history time-line and it will tell you the appropriate gear for the bike. If you have questions, you can ask Tim Lafler or Ed Norris, their resident experts. You can also put in a "wanted" ad for parts if you don't find what you want on campyonly classifieds or eBay. Now is the low season, so if you are shopping prices tend to be lowest at this time of year. Happy Shopping!!

I'd look for Campy Nuovo Record. Super Record was later and much more pricey. The Nuovo is just as nice and would really be "stylin."

Beautiful frame! With the polished high tech look perhaps Nuovo would seem a bit old fashioned. I could really see this as a Super Record bike or dare I say a 1st generation C Record would be gorgeous if somewhat anachronistic... 1986. I am a Campy man myself butI am rediscovering the beauty of Suntour Superbe and Cyclone stuff from the late 70s and early 80s. I hate to admit it but the designs are fantastic! I am an architect and designer so I feel qualified to remark. I am starting to amass a collection of Sun Tour stuff from ebay auctions.

Superbe and Superbe Pro are among the most beautiful parts out there, and functional too. Though I like Campy as well I'll take Superbe and Superbe Pro over all (especially for hubs)

Too bad that SunTour were such poor business people and got overwhelmed by Shimano (who continues to try to overwhelm everyone else). All modern derailleurs are based on the SunTour designs. They just weren't good enough business folks to understand what they had and build on it.

Back when these lovely frames were readily available and quite commonly seen here in the UK, they were considered a classy alternative to the more ubiquitous Colnago or cheaper Vitus brands. Anything other than lugged steel seemed pretty exotic and mildly suspect at the time. I never saw one with anything other than Campagnolo parts; Cinelli bars/stems and Mavic rims were considered superior to the opposition, I recall.
Our club champion used to ride one to work and on winter social/ training rides. I'd add that he used to float away from me on the hills......but he'd have done that on a delivery boy's bike:-)
If you do not mind being anachronistic, you can readily find somewhat newer Campag. parts. (I just paid $5 for a beautiful ca. 1990 Chorus hub, which I am going to lace up with an Omega rim for the Capo, which now has Chorus cranks and rear derailleur of similar vintage. All of the components are of the wrong time period, but the proper brand!)
Thanks everyone..I have already collected some SR stuff on ebay, just need cassette, brake levers, stem, bars and wheels.
