Classic & Vintage - Weird Question - Bike Transport via Moto

Has anyone ever successfully transported a bike with their motorcycle? I should probably ask in one of the motorcycle forums I frequent but I figure one of you guys might have done it.

I have a one time chance to get what I think is a nice vintage bike (more on that later) for $20 tomorrow only, but my car is in the shop and the only motor vehicle I have available is my motorcycle.

It doesnt have the top box on it now. I was thinking I could take the wheels off the bike and strap the frame to the back seat and over the tops of the side boxes, then strap the wheels on top of the frame.

I guess worst case I can just pay the guy and come back the next day. It's 50 miles away though so I'd rather get it home.

Why don't you take public transportation over there, and ride the bike back?

because I live in the United States. We don't have public transportation. That and I doubt the bike is ridable, let along for 50 miles.

i recall a rack where the bike was mounted sideways (similar to car trunk mounts) as well, perhaps you could just strap it on back in a similar fashion? (maybe scaffold something out of wood if you're worried?)

you'd also have to be aware of your new profile... no splitting lanes for you! ;)

Beaver Pond? Off 112 in Lincoln NH?? (actually, it might be Northwoodstock) I swear I used to fish off that rock every summer before I found out bears ravage that lake of fish.

I used to have a 2000 Bandit myself. The best way I've found to transport a bike on a motorcycle is to remove the wheels and strap them to the pillion, then wear the frame like a messenger bag, with the head tube on your left shoulder. Done it many a time. Fun way to befuddle cagers.

I've seen another thread on the topic.

One thing I've seen is a bike rack on a motorcycle trailer, mounted crosswise on the tongue similar to how they'd mount on a car hitch rack.

sounds about right. I did a tour last year that was all over the place in Vermont, New Hampshire,Maine, Mass, New York. That pond was just off the road. I was only there for a few minutes, taking a break.


as for the bike, it ended up not being what I thought. I thought it was a Gitane Tour De France, but instead it was a Astra Tour de France. So I passed.
