View Full Version : Antioxidant Cocktail
Bike for Life discusses this but doesn't provide a recipe. Can anyone shed some light on what it is?
Eat some fruits, vegetables and beans.

Dr. Kenneth Cooper referred to "antioxidant coctail" as vitamins E and C, and betacarotene, in his book
"The Antioxidant Revolution" (Cooper, K, The Antioxidant Revolution, Thomas, Nelson, 1994). I don't rememeber the exact blend but it's in the book.
At least one study showed athletes benefitting from this:
Schroder H, et al, “Nutrition Antioxidant Status And Oxidative Stress In Professional Basketball Players: Effects Of A Three Compound Antioxidative Supplement”, Int J Sports Med, 21(2):146, 2000.
Different antioxidants do different things. These are common compounds so there is no single recipe.
Dark fruit is VERY high in antioxidants. If you like blueberries, you are in luck.
But bananas have another kind of antioxidant, as does chocolate. Vegetables, coffee, etc.
Then there are a variety of pills that have extracts and/or vitamins that are antioxidant.
Now, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. I just got some powdered
fruit antioxidant extract and the label says in large, bold print to to use no more than a teaspoon.
I keep this stuff around. I eat a lot of fruit, and only take one when I haven't.

I am thinking they might be good for healing, so I am going to try a big wallop after long rides. It prob won't work, what the heck.

Antioxidant smoothie: blueberries, pomegranate juice, Acai (like Sambazon brand). These are the top three ingredients. Then add what you like: bananas, orange. ice cubes from alkaline water.
To this I add fresh ground flaxseed and sometimes dates. The dates are pitted and are most difficult to liquefy. So that I do first in the blender with hot water. Use little hot water, just enough to liquefy the dates. Otherwise you end up with a warm smoothie.
