General Cycling Discussion - Fashion Faux Pas?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is it a cycling fashion mistake to wear white ankle socks? I'd hate to be out of style when I could be wearing those classy road sign patterned socks. ;)

NO! NO! NO! White anklets have been my choice for years. But I',m not fashion conscious.
Possibly.... but if so, just make your own fashion statement and enjoy your ride!

I like to think my new cycling socks are making a statement..Beersteins.
That should make one popular with most cycling crowds...Just as long as it is not labeled Budweiser.

I'm confused about this...everyone I know wears white socks, for the most part ankle socks, espcecially when doing anything athletic. But every now and then, I'll hear some offhand comment that makes wearing white socks sound like a fashion sin that only Mom and Dad and engineers (me) would ever commit. If it's a sin, then at least 9 out of every 10 people I know is going spend eternity being brutally dressed and posed in flashy, revealing, retro outfits by a scary looking person in tight "pleather" pants who manages to perform every task while holding a starbucks coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other. My goodness...Dante didn't even see it coming.

Fashion faux pas. To me there is no such thing..Only what makes you feel good.
Being a pauser is a taboo, but to honor Coppi or LeMond by wearing the jerseys they wore is not. No different than when we wear Al Kaline's number on a jersey. Plus biking should be colorful..
Is not the paint job on a Cannondale or Klein colorful.. We think that to be a work of art. I would think wearing Armstrong's colors would make him proud.

Having pants stuck into your white socks and another odd pair on your hands as mittens is definately unstylish, but then again, it got my future wife to notice me!

Black socks are for mountain biking. White socks are appropriate for road biking. Brightly colored socks are for the bold among us. Generally lighter colors and patterns for the road, and darker socks for mountain. Bike socks should be ankle height only. The only exception is that knee-highs are permissible under winter tights. Triathletes may go sockless.
And of course, one must never, under any circumstances, wear underwear under one's padded bike shorts for any reason. Period.

Skorhead...By his books and all he expresses Armstrong's love of cycling is more than just money....He loves the sport and bikes...I believe that...Not that he ever refuses a profitable endorsement..
But his participation in charity events...His life's story..He is more than just a slave to the dollar...Local shop owners had an opportunity to talk L.A. at the Los Angeles Bike show. They said he is very personable and willing to just talk to avid cyclists anxious to meet up with him..
Heah, we have to have some kind of hero figures in this modern day society of hero-less public figures..
Look to the recent Forum thread about George Hincapie..Like to think we cyclists are less mercenary than the rest of the culture...

When I was starting out, I just wore my ordinary navy socks cycling. But I got what seemed like endless disparging comments about not wearing the proper socks. Proper socks? I never thought of socks as glamerous especially considering the capability of my feet in the odor production department.
Well, I switched to white athletic socks and that stopped the comments.
Now, I see everyone seems to be wearing colored socks. I am wondering if one of these days I will start getting negative comments on my white athletic socks and that I should wear what is right....... navy!!
The heck with them. Socks ain't pretty, they cover my feet, good enough.
In warmer months I wear Smartwool white ankle length socks.
In colder months I wear one or two pairs (depending on temperature) of Smartwool full length socks. The color doesn't matter because I'm also wearing tights.
For special dress occassions I wear these. :D

Ron...I just do not like the word fashion..The Tool Man does not use the word fashion..But beer steins...That is a fashion statement. ...Again as long as it is not Budweiser.Life is too short for cheap coffee and cheap beer.. ....I just bought a pair of Beer Stein socks along with other stuff for Christmas. Beer steins will compliment my new Time shoes for a Christmas day ride..
But, ankle socks..First of all -need coolmax, to cut down on odor production and for air wicking.
Also, when running about shoeless for whatever reason, the classic white spots for areas like short socks, helmet straps, sunglasses, gloves brands us as cyclists..Don't like to loose our idenity...
I rode so little this past summer, I am ashamed to say I lost that distinction..

The only time I'm "shoeless" is when I'm wearing these. Then the classic "cyclists tan line" (at the ankle) is on full display. :D

Hi,
what you want is good socks. The bestI have seen are the SmartWool RBX Racers. If your shoe is very snug, get the ultralite; otherwise get the standard RBX.
Your feet will thank you.

Well, if you have to ask...it probably is.
Anyhoo, I love mine white socks with black Sidis for that classic Buddy Holly look. Just don't take them off road or they will quickly become grey socks.
I had no idea there could be such different paradigms behind sock selection! You have given me much to ponder. Perhaps someday, I will be able to snatch the sock from your hand...er foot.
(Just don't call me Grasshopper!) :)

Has anyone ever worn mismatched socks? I have to admit that I have done this. StyleMan would have my head.
But those little things get lost I tell you!

Don't EVER try to ride in our paceline with white ankle shocks. You will be shunned.
We all get a real kick out of what the rest wear. From raggedy, holy shorts and white ankle socks or no socks to full pro-team racing kit. Its not what you wear that counts.
If you are comfortable then you have on the right apparel.
