I'll let the news speak for itself. Here (http://wesleying.blogspot.com/2008/05/news-coverage-update-and-round-up.html)
Here (http://www.courant.com/community/news/mr/hcu-midcrowd-0516,0,7642621.story)
And here's a campus wide email that was sent out.
1)
"This morning at approximately 1:30 a.m., Wesleyan’s Department of Public Safety requested assistance from the Middletown Police Department to help disperse a crowd on Fountain Avenue. According to the Middletown Police, there were in excess of 200 students on and around Fountain Avenue who would not disperse, verbally abused police and threw objects in the direction of police officers. The police decided to forcibly clear Fountain Avenue. The action resulted in the arrest of five Wesleyan students, two of whom were brought to an area hospital for medical attention. Both were treated and then released into police custody. Students who were at the scene have reported to university administrators and to the police that law enforcement officers used excessive force and were verbally abusive during their action in clearing Fountain Avenue."
2)
"Several hours ago, an incident occurred on Fountain Ave involving an
unusually large police presence. Over a dozen state and local police
vehicles were present. There were multiple arrests and medical
transports. Student witnesses cited the use of excessive force, including
a canine unit, tear gas, rubber bullets, and tasers."
Here are the student perspectives.
Here are a few links to the campus newpaper.

I'm completely horrified that this happened given that it was the last day of classes and students were gathering on a dead end street in the middle of campus the night before leaving. We've had parties much larger than this broken up without any incidents and I sincerely doubt that people were throwing beer bottles at cops. I also doubt that students were given 40 minutes to clear out.
I hope the video footage from the cruisers is made available to the public because in no instance of the response here do I think 'Serve and Protect'...
Gah!
Were all of the Dunkin Donuts closed in Middletown?

Probably. That's the only reason I can think of for 10+ police cruisers being on campus to bust a block party.

I can't imagine drunk college kids on the last day of school getting out of hand and rowdy. No, they couldn't possibly have thrown empty bottles or cans at the cops. Not at all.
Yeah, Right.

I'd sell off my Scott to see some bottles thrown your way.

You may as well, it's not like you ever ride it.

Those students deserved it, just for not going to an Ivy League institution. Slackers. :)

Just because you throw something at a cop doesn't mean they should treat you badly, why, where would we be if things like that happened all the time. For real. :)
My earlier post only mentioned (with sarcasm) that the college folk probibly were rowdy, that's all. I can't say either way who was at fault or will be found to be at fault.
And just because we have Humboldt State here doesn't mean they are ALL knuckleheads.

So, the thought is that the police had nothing better to do than make up stories about the poor innocent college students?
Yeah, I'll just bet a bunch of bored cops decided they wanted to spend their afternoon rousting college students so they could spend the next week filing paperwork about it...

I'm not saying that the students weren't in the wrong, but tasering, pepper spraying, shooting rubber bullets, and setting dogs on students who weren't the ones to do anything doesn't seem logical either. Arrest the students who were being rowdy, sure, but set dogs on the students who didn't do anything? I don't think anyone can say that's justified.
The police were also blocking entrance to the only road leading to the area, so dispersal was difficult. It also took ambulances a really long time to get to the students who were injured.
The incident also took place at like 2 A.M.
I'm not saying the students who acted belligerent and threw stuff at cops were wrong, no way! I just think that the reaction of the police force was an unjustified use of force. Earlier in the year a minority student was harassed because a cop saw him throw a sour patch kid or the like into the street as his cruiser was way behind the student.
Besides, I think the main issue was why campus police couldn't handle the issue given that it was on campus and all the housing surrounding the area was campus owned student housing aka noise shouldn't have been a problem to begin with because it was all students...
What would have happened if the students just cooperated?

I wondered how long it would be before someone mentioned this. Generally speaking police don't arrest people who are cooperative.

http://media.scout.com/media/forums/emoticons/166/Yawn.gif Ho hum. Sounds like another boring clash between cops and students. If you want to see state-of-the-art civil unrest, go to Berkeley, California and behold: Dumpster Muffin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUPEMflUTuk).
It was quite a bizarre scene going to Cal football home games last season. Here are more videos of the Berkeley tree protesters (I think most are NOT Cal students), affectionately known as "treetards" by Cal fans:

I remember in State College the police decided to break up a "riot" after a PSU football game. They broke out all their toys including rubber bullets. The unnecessary use of force caused a huge panic resulting in all sorts of damage.
Of course the city government cited the damage as proof that the force was justified. And to top it off, they blamed a pizza restaurant for organizing the riot and shut them down.

Generally police also don't pepper spray students who were being cooperative.
If you read what I wrote, you'd realize that I wasn't talking about people being arrested. I'm all for the arrest of people who are breaking the law. I'm not for the use of force in a crowd which was blocked by police cars, and then pepper sprayed when a few students were to blame.
We don't have a winner, I'm sorry to say.
