I figured it wouldn't be long before someone posted some drum corps... ;)
Here's Dustin Schletzer from 2002; too bad the camera's framerate sucks, because it's hard to see the singles at 4:09 and the individual flams early on:

I'm looking for a vid of the shout section at the end of BD 2002's Blue Rondo, too.
One of the cooler non-marching drum compositions I've heard (I think this was the "Easy, Teenage New York Version"):

Had to add some stuff from my era (although I didn't march SCV, and I'm not even a drummer; you'll never see videos of contrabasses, though, because we're just not as visually interesting!):

I was gonna post some Jo Jo Mayer, I'm really digging his stuff lately.
No Youtube drum solo thread is complete without the mac daddy of solos, the Weckl-Gadd-Colaiuta (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o-h5IJNO4E) showdown. Vinnie at 4:00, 4:30 and 5:00 is just sick.
Krupa soloing on match sticks at the end of this one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRjQzSwmEHw) That guy made drums cool.

No, I'm saying that being a drummer does not make one cool by default.
I've met some drummers...and some were dicks.

I met this guy back in 2004. He was super cool and let me check out his drums (the same kit in the vid actually). He does a lot more than just death metal. One talented cat indeed.

Derek is a close friend of mine. I'm damn proud he is finally getting some proper recognition outside of the death metal genre and is on the Modern Drummer festival bill this year. It's long overdue. I got my nice maple Sonor double bass kit through him when he was still working at Rez Drums.

There are a bunch of lesson/clinician videos of him, too -- and yeah, he sounds like a cool guy.

I guess I admire the dedication and chops, but I fail to see what's musical about it if you know what I mean. Maybe I'll think differently if I check out his other stuff. Blast beats to me just seem like a child's tantrum. :troll:

I know what you mean, too. It's basically "musical gymnastics", but I think it's still fun to watch.
The coolest recorded drum solo I've heard, IMO, is on Harry Connick Jr's She album, starting at 4:46 on "Joe Slam and The Spaceship". Take all the superfluous notes out of most of the solos in this thread, halve the number of the remaining notes, then just leave the groove intact.

For Latin Jazz drummer goodness, look for Poncho Sanchez and Francisco Aguabella. I've met both (actually, Professor Aguabella teaches at UCLA) and both are kickass guys.

May be its me, but i've been noticing lately that there seems to be a shortage of truly classically trained percussionists. Even some of the marching bands solos lack basic rudements. Just because they're basic, doesn't mean they sound cheap or crappy. One of the best fills I ever learned was a double paradiddle around the toms with alternating bass drums. I don't know, maybe it's just me...:(

I think that has more to do with competition judging than anything else. Scoring captions now include the entire ensemble under "music", whereas two decades ago it was "brass" and "percussion" separately (at least in drum corps). So, now, a lot of marching percussion books are written to complement the rest of the band, and notey rudiment-type passages often just add clutter to what the winds are doing.
You ask any of the top marching percussion writers who have been around the last thirty years what the biggest change has been, and that's what they'll tell you -- the emphasis is on the musicality of the whole ensemble. They used to write drum books specifically to win high drums, heavy on rudimentary stuff and insane chops. That won't win the show anymore.
Kevlar heads started showing up on the field at about the same time, too, and suddenly the judges were asking for more dynamic variety and low-volume sensitivity. You simply couldn't hear ppp buzz rolls from one-inch stick heights on mylar heads, but they worked with kevlar, and everybody had to keep up with the trend and start playing softer at times.
We still audition percussionists on their knowledge of all the rudiments, and I suspect that a lot of kids are still learning them as part of their fundamental instruction. They're just not written into field shows as much anymore.

I remember studying for a NYSSMA competition in 9th grade. The music I had to learn was sick. It wasn't all this buzz roll crap. I mean, each of the ten contestants stood outside the door awe struck at the guy inside rippin off the music. When we were all done, we all talked and found out each was impressed with every others solo. Even the parents couldn't decide who won. I remember listening to those guys and thinking " That's the drummer I want to be" I haven't picked up sticks in almost ten years. But after pokeing through youtube, I have to say, i'm not all that impressed, atleast with the scholastic side.....

My son does NYSSMA solos on snare and set, and adding marimba for next year. It's no walk in the park, and I'm pretty sure the standards are probably identical to what you were playing way back when. Things don't change much at the scholastic level imho. He's a 7th grader and plays some pretty cool stuff.
I have accomplished quite a few of my drumming goals, being the only hobby that I've had that has outlasted all the others. But my big regret is that I never did field core when I was young.
Do they have an old farts' field organization, for after the runts leave the nest?

You're in Rochester, hm?

http://brigadiers.com/
If you can run with a drum on, I say go do Statesmen or Brigs; I've marched both corps, and while they've both been title contenders & winners, each corps has a different approach to how they work. It may be a little late to get in this year's show, though, depending on where they need people.
They'd also be able to point you in the direction of an alumni corps. That's where you find the guys with chops.

Found it! I started looking for this bit since I saw this thread:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=09i636FIfhM&feature=related
It's only rehearsal footage (likely an open rehearsal, or "clinic"... yeah, sure, it's a chance to get used to the stadium :p), but at least it stays on the drumline better than the broadcast edit.

Maybe not THE "best" but for entertainment value I think any of the drummers (or the whole show for that matter) from BLAST! :
