The other day, I was at work and speaking with a staff member about my new interest....road biking. Gave up a different sport due to age and decided to bike. Anyway....she asked me if I rode my bike on the street. To this I naturally replied...of course...it is called road biking for a reason. She replied to me that she hated me and all of us that do as we all get on her nerves and we shouldn't even be on the road unless we have a motor on the vehicle. To put it lightly...I was stunned. She is normally a really nice lady.
My only response to her was that I had every right to be on that road as I pay taxes as well (We all do) and that the cause of most biking accidents are vehicle/driver negligence...not the biker. this apparently offended her. However, I did note that on her way out of the parking lot later that day....she was talking on her cell and putting on her makeup with her other hand...driving with her knees. Pulled up beside her at the stop sign and just shook my head. When she saw me...you shoulda see how quickly that cell and makeup disappeared. Don't even know what to say to her now.

Try not to make enemies over a disagreement like this. Show her cyclists can be law-abiding, friendly people. It might change her mind.

It won't change her mind, but you do make a very good point.

A colleague at work once told me matter-of-factly that he actively interferes with cyclists on the roadway, and that reading the news of a cyclist fatality warms his heart. He was not joking.

Some people are uninformed, arrogant and, occasionally, just plain stupid.. just like some cyclists.. let it go. If she has half a wit about her she now realizes she is an idiot.

I would say "I actively interfere with the careers of people who I consider *******s. You are on notice."

Ask him how he feels about being one phone call away from vehicular assault and having to cycle to work himself.

Decided just to smile at her and be nice as usual, but leave a news clip on her desk that i have about a lady getting herself killed doing the exact same thing while driving.

And remind her that we were here first.

I tell my coworkers that I'm riding so they'll have more gasoline for themselves. I've also told them I ride so as to keep as little of my money as possible from turning into Al-Qaeda donations. There's a certain sort of person who shuts right up after I say that. :D
