Fifty Plus (50+) - Where have you lived?

I was thinking that many of our paths may have crossed through the years. Thought it might be interesting to share where we have lived, and if you like, what years you were there.

No set rules to defining what "lived" means. I'm thinking of places where you might have spent 6 months or more of your life. That would include someplace where you vacationed for a month on six different times, that's long enough to have gotten to know a place pretty well and feel you have lived there. But someone might feel that a 3-4 month stay somewhere qualifies too.

Those are the fixed locations but I have wobbled around a bit. Been in every state except Hawaii. Been to Cuba, Hati and Japan. None of the wobbling amounts to more than a couple of weeks at a time.

I'll play. Born in Oxnard, CA and lived there till '86. Moved to Port Hueneme, CA and lived there till '88 (our place in Port Hueneme was a good 100 yards outside of Oxnard's city limit) then we moved back to Oxnard and have been here since. We don't move around much. My great great grandfather moved to Oxnard in the 1870s (actually it didn't have a name at that time but it was in what is now Oxnard) and we've never seen a reason to leave. My wife was born and raised in Ventura, CA and lived there till we were married in '83 which is when she moved to Oxnard (Ventura is across the river from Oxnard).

That's a near-hit for me. My father-in-law lived in Germantown, MD from the mid-70s through the early-90s. Visited there many times. That's when it was well away from the DC metro area, with several miles of green fields between it and Gaithersburg, with a growing town beginning to form around Montgomery Village.

He lived right behind a place on 355, a couple of miles south of the I-270 exit, behind a place that sold apples and cider, painted up like a big cider barrel.

The Germantown exit off of I-270 was just a dinky little stop with a gas station and a little store, where we always stopped and bought ice cream for our kids.

Traffic was very light all the way to Gaithersburg or north to Frederick.

Six weeks later moved to Buellton, CA. Moved on to Lompoc, CA about 2 months after. 1988/89 found me on temporary assignment in Cincinnatti, OH while RR and company stayed in Lompoc. From 1992 til 1997 I traveled all over the US and the Carribean working as an independent consultant for 2 wk to 2mo jobs. 1998 found us moving to Vacaville, CA and we are planning on staying here for a long time. Moving sucks.

Except as noted, I've enjoyed almost every place I've lived. I could stay in the Seattle area forever, but would happily move back to London or Mexico under the right conditions. Loved the Chicago area, but not sure I'm ready for Chicago winters again. I *really* enjoyed my time in LA, but it seems considerably more congested (and expensive!) today than it did then. Could also live in Kansas again if the weather didn't s*** most of the year.

Also, in 1979-81 and 1994-99 my jobs required a lot of international travel...I think I once figured I spent another two years abroad during this time, but only 2 to 4 weeks at a time.

In many cases, I got to know these cities very well by bicycling. Something about biking in new towns really allows you to learn them well. One of my guilty pleasures is riding into a major city on a Sunday morning when there is no traffic in the CBD and sneaking into parking garages on my bike...riding all the way up, all the way down. Used to do this a lot in Dallas because there were no hills to speak of there...

Deeply look forward to moving again! :D I loved all the places I've lived though Grand Rapids was not the right place for me when I was there, at least partly because of a long term love affair that went sad. Also, there was a three month stint in San Juan, PR that I call my Black Period since I was profoundly broke almost the entire time I was there (Tang & peanut butter broke).
