My friends finally convinced me to get into BMXing. I got a new GT Bump weighing at 29 lbs. stock last Sunday and it's pretty nice. The only problem is, I can't even bronco :(
I've been riding with a lot of good people around here and I just feel stupid when I ride with them. They're doing all these insane tricks and I can't even do a Bronco. From what I've been told, all you do is bend your knees, pull the bars up, jump, and push the bars down and the rear will go up.
All I can manage to do is get the front up. I can't get the rear up whatsoever. I've had my bike for a week now and I just feel retarded for not being able to do one of the simplest tricks for this long. How long did it take you guys to learn to bronco when you first got into BMXing?

Sound's like you have the steps down, just need more practice.
Maybe you're not pulling up high enough before you push down on the bars?
Practice bro, you've only been doing it for a week, just keep trying.

Yea, I suppose I'll get the hang of it after a while. It's just frustrating watching all my friends do all these crazy tricks when I can't do a single thing :(

I can't do a "bronco" but I can do a retarded bunny hop.

never learned how to bronco.... looks too funny
footjams are always fun though
First step - stop calling it a Bronco.
It's Bunny Hop. It doesn't matter HOW you get both wheels off the ground w/out assitance from a ramp, it's all a Bunny Hop.
It was like that 20+ years ago when I did my first bunnyhop & that's the way it should be.
Not J-hop, Bronco, Pro-hop, or even super-donkey-wrestler hop.
The only exception I make is the Nollie. Though really, it should just be Nose-hop, we ain't skateboarding.

dont push the bars down, push them foward as you tuck you knees in. time it in this order: pull up-> jump->push bars foward and tuck kness in(the jumping/tucking/pushing bars is done almost simultaneously). and really pull up when you pull up, almost like you're trying to hit your waist with your bars. oh, and point you toes down a little when you jump/tuck your knees in so your shoes can grip the pedals. hope this helps. dont get frustrated if you dont get it right away. it takes a lot of [ractice and patience to learn. It may be a while before you start getting a few inches off the ground, but keep at it and you'll get it eventually. everyone had to start somewhere.

I think what kids refer to as a "bronco" is a actually a nollie, which is a hell of a lot harder to do than a bunnyhop.

No he's talking about a bunnyhop. I'm going to have to say nollies aren't hard but they are probably harder than a bunnyhop.

a nolie isnt much harder. if you can nose manual for a foot, or even just get into that position(with all you weight over the front end, not just hopping the back tire up) you can nollie. but doing a high nollie is harder. i can only get about a foot or so and Ive been trying them for a while. are you sure hes not tallking about pulling up so you're on your back wheel and then jumping your weight foward so you're on your front wheel? kinda like a horse bucking or something?
I can't even bronco :(
I don't know if when you say "bronco" you mean "bunnyhop", or if you're actually talking about something different or what, but in any case to get your back wheel up you need to angle your pedals forward so your toes point downwards, then lean your weight forward and use your legs to pull the back of the bike up. At no point do you jump.
Just leave the front wheel on the ground until you get the hang of pulling the back wheel up, and then you can try pulling the front wheel up first. And then you'll be doing bunnyhops.

As I said, nollieing is harder. Nobody nollies up a curb.

I didn't ask for people to give me a lesson on trick name usage. But to the few that actually responded properly to my post, thank you.
But at any rate, what I referred to as a "bronco" is pulling the front up first and then pulling the back up after.

anytime there's a trick i'm not quite understanding, i'll find a vid on youtube or somewhere else with an expert doing it. watching it over and over usually makes it clear what i need to do to pull it. to bunnyhop, you've really gotta get the front wheel way up in the air at first, at the apex, jump the feet straight up and push the bars forward to level out the rear end. my first bunnyhops were learned trying to bunnyhop a parking space line, then a can, then a curb, then much higher. keep trying, it'll come. nothing worth having comes easy.

Yea, I've been watching a lot of instructional videos on YouTube over and over again. I pretty much know what I have to do in order to do a bunnyhop, I just need to keep practicing. I'll get it eventually :)

Good job, the first step is naming it right so you know what to search. But bunnyhops are quite easy once you get the hang of it.

i think "bronco" is like a carry-over from little-kid talk, sort of like a "poppawheelie" heh. it's all good. :)

haha i always thought a bronco was this lame thing where you keep hopping back and forth from your front wheel to your back wheel, and you keep repeating that. hahahahahahaha
