I think I have Windows XP. What do I type/click if I want to go to the list of startup programs and tell the computer to not start AIM every time and other programs that bog the speed down?
Download Autoruns.

1. Open up the System Configuration tool by going to Start, then Run, then typing in msconfig.
2. Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck AIM (if it's present).
3. Restart your computer for it to take effect.
Holy Jeebus. It's got nothing to do with msconfig or autoruns. Look for the options in the AIM menu and there should be a check box that says to automatically start it up and/or login when connected to the internet. Uncheck it.

No kidding. :thumb: It called knowledge and understanding. Every program has some sort of options settings.

Honestly the other day I did uncheck some box in aim , the one that says "log in at start up" or something. It doesn't log me in now but it does pop the box up. Thanks for the replies

Sure, for AIM, Autoruns may be overkill, but nonetheless, it is an extermely useful tool when you want to stop the hidden things. For one, I use it to stop useless services and other things that run in the background. I get extremely annoyed by the bloatware that companies like HP put on their printers, and using Autoruns is simply faster (especially if you want to stop multiple things) than looking through complicated GUIs to find the little checkbox.
I swear by autoruns, because it puts everything that starts up under one list, or a tabbed list. From there, I can disable as much as I want. It also runs under safe mode, so I can usually disable most spyware if cleaning off someone else's PC.

Ugh, don't go digging around in MSConfig or using autoruns, use the damn properties dialog in the software that turns on automatically, I know AIM, and A LOT of other software has it.
Long term, I'd recommend ditching AIM for something like Trillian. Tillian is less intrusive and doesn't vomit ads at you every other second.
