Kidney stone, that is.

For the past 1 to 1-1/2 year, I've known about it. For the most part, it so didn't trouble me. Only occasional discomfort. About 3 weeks ago, I took a trip to the ER as it was more intense. They gave me something, pain gone. But, took CAT-Scan. Found out, the small stone from a year ago had grown to 11mm's!!

Went to Urologist, he sent me for X-rays to see if they are solid matter. Got them done. Now waiting for Monday so he can talk to me in person. He said if they are, he'll do a lapro--somthing-er-other-scopy with sound waves to break them down. I don't want 15 more little stones floating around in there--they hurt just one-by-one!! A friend said I should have them go up the tube and drag it out. Dr said nope: I'm too muscular or some-such nonsense. I'd like a 2nd opinion. But, like only 2 urologists in LA area. Sucks!

Friday, I had pretty rough pain at work, left early. Got home, doped on Tylenol/Codone. Good stuff--let me sleep. Felt dizzy all Friday night and Saturday morning. Threw up around 2pm Saturday. Feeling fine now (8pm). A little weak, but that's it. Have a race tomorrow late morning and afternoon. Hope I'm up for it. If not, I'll pass on 'em.

Anyone else have something similar? Advice?

Any preventative advice? How do you get them, or better yet, what can I do to NOT get them???

Well, the doc says that with cycling long distances like I do, I'm sure to dehydrate, which helps their formation :( I try and drink as much as I can. I even come away from centuries feeling bloated because of the water intake.

On the other hand, how do you get a Dr to perform a procedure he'd rather not do?

My guess is that he doesn't want to drag it out because it's invasive, and a screw up could mean a perforated ureter. If he can use sound waves to break it up, he can just give you medicine to help ease the pain as you pass 15+ stones. This is all just a guess though.

If you don't agree with the 1st Doc, get a 2nd opinion.

Ha! I'm in the same boat there. I'm trying to convince my urologist to either A) Remove my left testicle or B) Perform surgery on the veins that are leaky (Similar to vericose veins, but in the scrotum). So far he's only good for pain medicine and antibiotics. I'll twist his arm again next week after further test results. Having chronic Epididymitis & Orchitis sucks.

Drink lots of water. Lots of water. Avoid "dark liquids" - tea, soda, coffee, etc.

like most have said - lots of water. The medicine I take to prevent gout has a side effect of causing kidney stones so the doc told me to drink "at least" 8 glasses of water a day to prevent them.
