I'm in the process of organising a Cycling Challenge. It's only 50km but I live in a developing country (pop. <1M) where there are not a lot of cyclists... so, one of the challenges is getting people to take part.

I organised a fun cycle earlier this year and we go around 300 cyclists. I'm expecting a lot less for the challenge... 50 would be great.

I plan to ask for $150-200 entry fee an give away +/- $200 worth of gear (Jerseys, mobile phones, bottles and sponsors merchandise) as well as brunch, after the ride. Some of the gear (like the jersey) we will pay for but most will be provided by sponsors.

We will provide a form where the participant can approach 20 people for $10 each (or 10 for $20) to pay their entry fee. This means they cyclists gets $200 worth of stuff + brunch and their sponsors pay for it.

Does any have any advice they'd care to share on organising charity events/challenges?

Cheers up front :)

I'll need some background info, like what country, etc.

Make it challenging enough to draw, but not so challenging that people don't want to come out.

Look for alternative base funding as well.....corporate sponsorship, etc and offer them big banners. Get media involvement locally. Make the corporate contributions worth about a buck-fifty for every dollar they contribute in exposure. What companies do you have locally that this market share will be the most beneficial to?

Plan the logistics thoroughly. How are you going to support the riders? Do you have support vehicles available, and do you have communications? (Local amateur radio people are invaluable here.....)
