I woke up a little early, probably due to the heat. I noticed that the sun had that certain shade, as it was shining through my bedroom window, and I could tell it is going to be another hot one (even though they say it's going to be cooler today ... right!). I decided to get out on the road by 7 am. It took a nice easy pace riding to Caltrain station at Menlo Park. Had a nice latte at Cafe Borone, while I waited for everyone to show up.

So Bostic, then jinws. Waited for Blastradius, who came on the southbound train into Menlo. But where's uspspro. Did he miss the train again? We decided to go to Starbucks, as Blastradius was running late, and he didn't have any coffee or breakfast. On our way there, Marco (uspspro) called Henry (Blastradius). Marco would meet us on the way over on Sandhill. I think we need to get Marco an alarm clock. He keeps missing the beginning of the ride.

We met up with Marco at the top of the climb on Sandhill. We proceeded to the climb up OLH. For some reason, I was climbing OLH much better today than before. Not sure if it was the coffee and bagel breakfast, or the easy ride over, or the extra latte I had. I did notice I was riding with my head up, focusing on certain points on the road, as I was climbing. Maybe that's the key. I made it up OLH in about 29 minutes. That's the first time in a long time I can remember doing it that fast. By the time we made it to the top of OLH and Skyline, it was about 10:15 am. SesameCrunch was going to meet us at 10:30 am, but he was running a little late.

The original route was going down West OLH, but Marco didn't like the blind curve, as you cross onto 84. Instead, we decided to head north on 35, to 84, then ride 84 south. There was no Taxi777 here, but then I hear Blastradius yell out "You guys all suck", then he put the hammer down. I follow closely, then I see uspspro catapult down. Shift all the way, and buckle down, and I followed uspspro, but couldn't quite catch him. I later look at my Garmin, and I figure we were going 45 mph down that stretch. Woohoo!

We filled water at the spigot at the store on 84 and 35. It was around 11 am, and Blastradius needed to get back (already in the doghouse, no need to make it worse with the wife). So now it's just myself, uspspro, Bostic, SesameCrunch, and Jinws. We had a good paceline going down Pescadero, but I think I led to fast, as when I pull out, I could not follow the pack, as the pace blistered and the slight uphill ascent. I did eventually catch up, and we proceeded into Pescadero for lunch.

Afterwards, we continue up the 3 evil sisters. Jinws wanted the 3 evil sisters to be over, fast. I kinda wanted it to be over too, but the breeze was so cool at this point, I wanted to enjoy the cool air for a little bit more. Finally, we finish the last evil sister, and head down Hwy 1. There was a little bit of fog going on, so we couldn't really get a good view of the ocean. That kept the temps nice a cumfy. SesameCrunch continued straight on home, while we turned right onto Tunitas, and get ready for the temps to rise.

As great as I felt earlier on, on the OLH climb, and even the Haskins Hill climb ... I have always had problems with Tunitas, and today would not be any different. Perhaps I spent too much energy earlier on the OLH and Haskins Hill climb, but it did feel good. I was slow climbing Tunitas, and I was the last one up the hill.

I did miss an episode at the top of the hill though. Uspspro decided to take off his helmet, and straddle it on his handlebars. However, when he did this, it locked his steering up, and I think locked up his brakes. He ran into a car, and the driver was not very happy. As Bostic says, he was afraid there was going to be a fist fight or something. Then, Jinws comes along, and the driver backed down. I guess he figures 3 is more than 2. In addition to this, uspspro's brakes got out of alignment a bit, and the pin that aligns that brake and shifter was now gone. First, the "bonk" episode, now the helmet and brake lock up issue ... what will it be next week?

This was still a hot ride, but it was nice to cool down when we finally got to Pescadero. However, when we turned inland, it got hot again. It was a long day, but I am glad to have company today. Thanks all, Bostic, SesameCrunch, Jinws, uspspro, Blastradius for a fun-filled day. This sure beats 200 miles in 100+ degree temps.

Stats:
Distance: 84.03 miles
Altitude Gain: 6408 feet
Average Speed: 12.6 mph

I don't have too much to add.

It was my second time on OLH, last time I think I took more than 40 something minutes. Should've been better today. First time up Tunitas, holy crap that was steep.

About the incident, the driver was ok, it was his friend that was bugging me. Walking around like he's bad*****. Typical ghetto/thugish teenage behavior. I live in the cuts so when I see stuff like that, I get prepare for things to go down, maybe I'm just paranoid. But he did get back into the truck, so all good. I hope Marcos shifter can be repaired.

Thanks Ron again for organizing this ride, it was very fun doing a whole new route and ride in a paceline. I got to pull for the first time ever. I think I screwed up though, wasn't sure how fast the pace is, when I saw Marco on my butt, I got nervous and went a little faster. He is crazy fast!

Holy Cow! Marco, you keep getting into trouble. Didn't you have trouble with some driver a couple of weeks ago when dropping Ruth off at work?

Thanks for the ride, guys! Nice paceline down Pescadero Creek Rd. We were bookin'!

you know, honestly, I think those two kids were just looking for trouble. You know how it is, 2 teenagers, one of them is egging the other on and crap like that. I'm just glad nothing bad happened.

It was OK. It was a slow motion 3 mph kind of crash. I even stuck my hand out in an effort to protect the bike from hitting the car.

Basically the lever got smacked to the side and broke off the little "tab" on the lever body (see pic below).

Only a $15 part at Jenson USA.

Henry! Your bike is sick dude! Sounds like you guys had a great adventure. Glad to see all the Bf'rs had good rides all around the bay despite the weather.

Thanks, it's slowly getting dialed in.

Cage bolts on the seat-tube cage came loose on the climb up OLH.
On the way down 84, the front brake pads squealed like crazy.
One more saddle height micro adjustment heading up Canada.
And I think it has the same headset spacer creak as my Bianchi had.

This bike cruises almost effortlessly. I may just leave it 50/36 and 12/25.

I bought a Halo on my way home from the ride man. The sweat in the eyes problem was killing me.

Helmet stays on.

Funny thing is I have only taken off the helmet on one other climb I can remember. It was really hot and I was getting a ton of sweat dripping.

Hopefully the Halo works well.

Bike is fine, I am fine.

Just pissed off because I had a nice rhythm going up Tunitas.;)

Henry, last week I took off my seat, seat post, seat collar, cleaned and greased everything including the seat rails. Just a very light coat. All noise is gone! and everything has held tight for 300+ miles.
Maybe that might help

The Halo headbands work very well. I never have trouble with perspiration going into my eyes since I have been using them. It does feel a bit weird to have it run down the side of your face but you get used to it quickly. They are also lightweight compared to the standard bandannas that I used to wear and a heck of a lot cooler.
