Why can't I make the urge for a new bike stop?!?

Bought my first real bike last year, Specialized S-Works (aluminum), bought a new one 3 months ago, Trek 5900 (carbon), and now, not only do I have the urge to try a Ti, but I also want to get a steel bike too. I've test ridden both Ti and steel and liked them both. This urge to be able to choose my type of ride when I ride is overtaking me. How do I make it stop?!?

I love my Trek, it rides like a dream. I also love my S-Works. So, why am I still drawn to buy a Ti and steel bike? More importantly, how do I stop the urges? These urges are gonna put me in the poor house soon!

Make it stop!!! :)

You tell me! I haven't finished outfitting my 2nd bike, and I am talking with my LBS about a thrird. When my wife finds out, I'm toast.

The only way to make it stop is to own everything you want. Then you only have to worry about next years products.

Give enough money away to charity or your 401k/roth so that you do not have enough money to spend on bikes.

Or..............get married :)

In between your wishing are you doing any riding? Don't forget the sole purpose for buying a bike. . . is to ride it. Wish lists are nice, but like what a2psyklnut said. What about next years hot new stuff? Eventually you might have enough bikes to open your own bike shop. Hmmm, not a bad idea.

Opening up a shop wouldn't work. It would require you SELL some of things in there.

MINE, ALL MINE! YOU CAN'T HAVE ANY! GO AWAY!

Not a good business plan if you ask me.

Yeah, I ride year round. Riding's not the problem, "wanting" is the problem. I am married and my wife also want to get a Ti bike. She already have a aluminum & carbon bike as well. Although, she can justify it 'cuz she races, I just ride for fun. It's a horrible disease.

EagleEye I would be willing to help you stop. First you need to rid yourself of all temptation. So pack up all your stuff for shipping and send it to me that way it will not be tempting you. No there is no need to thank me I am more than willing to help out :D

Well you just made me feel better for paying 300 for a new frame to replace my dented Allez. Though I suppose the fact that I'm basing where I go abroad on cycling opportunity (Australia here I come) doesn't make me much better...

it's these darn magazine ads that are driving you to distraction, i'm sure. when i read bike mags, i find myself bemoaning the fact that i've got a crap little road bike. but in between issues, i'm quite content. stay away from temptation and you'll get over it. and since i don't even own a SECOND bike (much less a fourth and fifth!), you don't deserve any more bikes.

stay out of bike stores too. they're designed to put the 'want' into ya. funny how that works.

about the only way i'm going to get another bike is to earn it by putting some more miles on. then it'll feel justified. or perhaps wreck it...but i can't figure out a way to do that and not wreck me too!

perhaps you should be required to put the same amount of miles on each bike you own. so if one gets a second bike, one has to put 100 miles per week on EACH. etc etc.

ah but who am i kidding? hop in your Hummer and run down and buy another bike. if you and your wife can afford four or five good bikes between you, what's another few in the garage? might as well buy em all.

(not bitter. really i'm not. :) )

Holy crap! You've overcome the spousal approval factor! The impossible has become possible.

The reason the urge is so bad is because the wife wants a Ti race bike.

Logic: Hey, if you're gonna get a Ti bike, I should get one too. :)

It's working so far, I haven't gotten any backlash yet.

Among the three, steel is the best for me. I have stopped here, and since money is so tight right now, I have to stop :D....

Believe it or not, it's this forum that makes me want new stuff. I would read about how people love there Ti, carbon, steel, etc. bikes and I think...Hmmm. I actually don't care for the bikes in the magazines. I get more tempted reading it here. The endorsement of the average guy has more impact on me than the pro's or ads. I can relate more to the average guy.

dYou have it real bad. You make guys like me look 'good' in contrast. I came to the sport (after years away) this summer. Bought a second (new frame) by the same maker Cannondale and am now building a second bike with better pieces.

I do like the look of Ti. Very sleek. But for now I will be happy with SAECO Team Replica numero 2!

As I've stated elsewhere... I just got my new Ti bike and I am sooooo in love. I sit for hours and stare at it... :p

As far as too many bikes. Sheesh! Is that possible?! ;)

I've got a steel/chromo frame road bike, a chromoly road bike, a steel hybrid, a 6061 aluminum mt. bike and now a Ti road bike. I figure all I need is a carbon frame and Supergo has one on sale for only $2099.00 loaded (or 1499.00 somewhat loaded)!

As for you. Dude. You're Jonesin' haaaaaaard... Ain't it awesome?!!

yeah i didn't want to mention that dirty little secret...the forums are bad for your wallet! :) at least there aren't too many pictures. for me it's seeing...although if i actually started trying some out at my LBS i'm sure i'd be doomed. not doomed to buy, because i can't afford it. but doomed to want so bad i'd cry. and one shouldn't cry in a bike shop. it make you an easy mark.

quoting bits and pieces of my email, as you did, made me look like i was actually envious or upset...please know that it was all in good fun. if you get enjoyment out of all your bikes, then none are wasted. if you don't use one or two of them, sell them or give them away. riding is what it's all about.

What pulls me in is, "As I've stated elsewhere... I just got my new Ti bike and I am sooooo in love. I sit for hours and stare at it... ." Not the fact that he has all those bike, but how much he love his Ti bike.

Didn't mean to make you look bad, was just responding to your post. But you do bring up a good point here. I should say that I don't mean to make anybody feel envious or upset. I wasn't boasting. The reason I post the bikes that I have is because I really love them and am a proud owner of them. Actually, the 5900 frameset was a gift to me from my brother, but I had to outfit it with components, so I didn't buy the whole bike, just have of it.

This thread was triggered after I read a post from RonH saying how much he love her Tuscany in another thread. There are a lot of cool, laidback people on this forum, so I thought I post something light-hearted.

So, I want to apologize if I've offended anyone.

Um, where exactly are you looking that an Ottrott costs $14K? And what kind of components does it have? An Ottrott frame is $4600. Let's even say $5000 for the ST. Colorado Cyclist sells an Ultegra group for about $600. We'll go ahead and give you a Cinelli Ram handlebar for another $500, Selle San Marco Aspide composite ($300), Jetstream fork ($500) and, just for kicks, the $3K Z4s from Zipp. Add a liberal $600 for random highend stuff (pedals, seatpost, headset, etc) and you're still 3.5K short... and I can't imagine that kind of stuff on an Ultegra build. If someone is actually quoting you this price, look elsewhere.

like in all areas of hobbying, it is fun to brag about how LITTLE you pay (most bang for the buck)
not how much.

when showing off my sound system i brag how little i paid, not how much. same with biking.

i save my change to defray large costs. i saved 2 years of change, went to the bank and redeemed over $500 towards my family trip to disney.

i rarely buy myself anything, as everything goes to my kids and wife presently.

i can't justify a lightspeed at the expense of a semester of college for one of my kids.

It was advertised in the back of Velonews current issue. and No I'm not
looking at an Ottrott. The way I figure it I could build one, full campy
record, high zoot wheels, all the nice carbon fibre bits for say $10k.
I like my steel Serotta, so I'm not really looking but was just in the
spirit of the thread.

word.

if bragging can be justified at all (i assume we all do it on occasion!), it only makes sense to brag about the high cost of one-of-a-kind stuff. services, craftmanship, that sort of thing. "i've got the best wheelsmith in the world building my wheels, and he charges $300 per minute! i should have them back in a month or so..."

it doesn't make sense on mass-produced items, including most aspects of a bike. bragging that you paid $2000 over sticker price for your new toyota lacks a certain oomph.

i can't justify a lightspeed at the expense of a semester of college for one of my kids.

but your kid is going to owe you a litespeed upon graduation! i'd get that in writing.

no no, you didn't make me look bad. i just saw what i'd written, reflected back at me, and went "urgh." if we were all sitting around a bar talking, we'd all know what everyone meant by their facial expressions. internet forums leave room for error. but i knew what you meant!
