Advocacy & Safety - Offtopic: Cyclist in coma after being attacked in park

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, sorry for this semi-offtopic post, but I wanted to post it here because the touring forum is the only one I read regularly. This is scary sh*t.

"A 38-year-old man is in stable condition after he was attacked while cycling through Marlborough Park in Ville St. Laurent late last night. The incident occurred between 11 p.m. and midnight near the corner of Beauzčle and Carroll Sts., said Montreal Police Constable Laurent Gingras. It is believed a group of about 10, possibly youth or people who frequent the park regularly, confronted the man in the park, beat him with a blunt object like a baseball bat and stole his bicycle, he added The man was able to flee to his nearby home where his wife encouraged him to go to the hospital. Once there the man, who suffered severe head trauma during the assault, fell into a coma. Police have no suspects in the case and are asking the public's help to identify any persons involved in the attack. Anyone with information is asked to call Info-Crime at 514-939-1133"

I also wanted to post this because the event took place in my neighborhood, 1km from my home. The thing is, I typically leave my almost-daily training-ride around 10pm and come back home around 1am. Needless to say, I'll always carry my cell phone with me from now on.

I don't know what the laws are in Canada ( I suspect they are not in your favor here), but that is an excellent reason why I always carry a concealed weapon when I am in any weird areas, like our bike path here; or rest areas or the like. I know that it is controversial, and gets people all worked up, but you aren't going to do much damage to ten kids with a cell phone. Chances are, laws allowing of course, that had that man had a small firearm, just showing it, and letting them know that someone is serious about self defense would have diffused the situation before there was violence. Then, after that, use the cell phone to call the cops and report the incident.

Frame pumps are for puppies - they don't know any better. Something more lethal is called for in the case of humans that do!

yikes....i grew up in st laurent and the parks at night are full of bored suburban losers. I think i know that park too...not like it's the guy's fault obviously, but you have to be kind of mazzo to ride your bike through there at that hour. I heard he's out of his coma and expected to recover but they haven't found the idiots who did it.

Useless humans like these need to be discarded. Glad the guy survived.
