Any recommendations for top of the line CAR trunk style bike rack (most secure, relative ease of use, etc)? Thanks in advance.

Do you mean a rack, or a trunk bag?

Somewhat depends on the intended use.
I use a Blackburn Expedition 2 Rear Rack and they are bullet proof.

I use the Topeak Explorer Rack and the MTX line of trunk bags. They all slide onto the rack and lock into place with a clip on the front of the rack. They are very secure and durable. I have 3 different bags and I have been through some heavy downpours and they all seem to keep the rain out well.

I'm new to cycling, but I thought I'd throw my (only) experience out there.
I have an Allen Deluxe (http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Deluxe-2-Bike-Trunk-Mount/dp/B000ELUXFC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1211383029&sr=8-4) rack. It secures to my '98 Jetta rock solid. Amazingly easy to put on... seconds to remove.

The only weird thing is how long the top two straps are. But it's made to fit almost every vehicle around, so the extra is understandable. ... and could be cut with no problems.

I would consider the Saris Bones trunk rack to be one of the top condenders. I think they are popular and durable. I've got one; it's fine.
