Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - New Wheelset-Want some Deep Vs

I am getting a new wheelset for my Bianchi Fremont, and want a pair of Deep Vs or a pretty decent all around town wheelset. I found the following and want to know what you think of them, also if you have any other ideas as to what woudl be good for me let me know. Thanks

Own both...Weinmanns are kind of cheap and nasty compared to the Velocities, but affordable and a bit lighter, I think. Functionally, it's fine.

just so you know, if you buy a budget wheelset online you'll need to re-build them within the first 100 miles because they will be so poorly tensioned. I got my LBS to rebuild a pair for $40 which was a steal, and it was still cheaper than doing a full build through an LBS but not by much and then they don't stand behind them, I wouldn't do it again. As for a great town set I ride Velocity Deep V's to formulas on my town beater but I'd rather be rolling on DT Swiss rr 1.1's to formulas, way lighter super strong and way less flashy. You could also go with Mavic Open Pro's but the DT's are a better build IMO. But then again staying at $200 can be tough for a pair built up. I would say don't skimp here, wait another 2 weeks for a paycheck and get what you really want and do it right the first time because your wheels are what actually are rolling and you should choose wisely! aat $40/hour shop rate, how much would it cost to have a set of wheels built up with some decent fixed gear hubs such as IRO or Nashbar? Thanks

ive always preffered my deep vs due to the fact that theyre strong as ****, its up to u wether or not u want to keep them

that warning above is pretty much complete bull****. There are three main deep section rim wheelsets that you will find on ebay. Look into Vuelta XRP wheels, Velocity Deep V, and Wienmann Deep V. People are going to tell you that there is a huge difference in them all but honestly they will all have about the same weight and all have about the same shape and you most likely wouldnt notice any difference other then cosmetic between them. They wont need to be rebuilt as previously stated but they may need to be tensioned or trued when you get them. A shop should be able to go over the wheels for you when you get them and check everything over for a small fee. The main important part as with all wheels is to use a quality cog and lockring and have them properly installed.

I don't know the Alex solo wheels, but any $200 wheel set probably won't be much of an upgrade in terms of performance. If you like the way the Deep Vs look, go for it, but I wouldn't expect much of a performance boost with them.

If I were you I would run what you've got them until I needed new wheels.

I wouldn't call my warnings bull**** since Thats the exact protocol I had when I got mine online so I speak from personal experience. I would say that if a shop spends an hour "truing" your wheels it isn't going to be a tension and true for a small fee, since that process takes just a few minutes for an experienced wheel builder. I was not saying they will take off all the spokes and actually re-build them but rather re-built in the fact that they will come so poorly tensioned that it is not just a matter of truing but rather the entire process of building a wheel other than lacing and getting the spokes set. You can deny it if you want but a quality build is an hour worth of work away from completion at least. I do agree with you on the differences between the above deep sectioned rims just go with whatever you want and your not going to notice a bit of difference in any of them other than cosmetic and maybe some price. Yes when you get the wheels I would remove cog and lockring and apply lube properly and re install properly otherwise your hubs are likely to be toast on your first skid or skip. If I were you I would stick to formulas for your hubs unless you are willing to cough up more money, I've ran the surley's and didn't like them as much and they are certainly not worth the extra cash, as for most of the hubs you will find by milwalkee or IRO they are almost all re-badged formulas and your paying a bit more for a label and/or colors. Either way unless you can throw down way more than your willing stick to the formulas or a rebadged one and just replace a cartridge occasionally. If you have a wheelset in my honest opinion you should keep riding on them until you have the cash to get a wheelset built by your LBS and you will have a much better build and someone to stand behind them as well as supporting local industry.
