Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Let's see those utilitarian fg/ss bikes.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So you don't wear your sister's pants or a white belt, don't ever feel the need to do bar spins, and don't like to destroy those high end tyres by skidding them.
:D
You might have fenders and racks on your bike because it rides in the rain and has to haul your crap all over the place and it might even have some bad ass lighting or studded tyres if you ride it in the winter.
Your bike probably runs brakes.
Some would say that a fixed gear is not a utilitarian machine due to it's lack of multiple gears but I disagree... this is my all weather commuter / tourer and what I will be riding after the apocalypse.

... do you only ride hoods? that looks like a.. painful position for riding drops.
i like the pannier u-lock holder.

There's only one brake and one hood and the position of the bars puts the drop almost level with the saddle and allows for a pretty comfortable arm / riding position.
The bars are Sakae randonneurs and they have a little lift across the top and flare out at the drops.
Ah, you have it set up old-school mountain bike dirt drop style.

ah. i wasn't paying attention. i see the single hood.
still. i feel like that'd put your hands at the bend in the bar at the drops.
oh well. my handlebar position is weird too... and i also have sakae randonneur bars, haha.

I bought an IRO specifically for it's utilitarian properties and even though it's fixed, since it has two brake holes, I figured I might as well take advantage of them. It has many "faces"/uses

Just made a DIY pannier out of an old bag, stuck a rack on my bike and voila! No more sweaty back for the summer. I should take a full pic to show of the utilitarianess of it.

In winter work-a-day mode. Brake in front, rack in back. Full fenders and slightly knobbly 35mm cross tires.

Definitely the 50th time I've posted my old Stella, but utilitarianism was what I had in mind. All the details here (http://velospace.org/node/1645). I was going to get the Nitto rear rack for more hauling capacity, but I'm going to build up an entirely purpose-built hauler/rain bike instead.

Regardless, a hot little bike.

snow = miche supertype
commuter = maybe but it being silver doesn't matter too much to me. I'd totally forget about it a minute into the ride:D

Just posted a separate thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=420034) about this, but I'll post it up here too. The first of a fleet of 12 community bikes. That's a cetma 3-rail with a shopping basket affixed with mirror hangers and a bungee. I'm still working on a simpler front release for the basket.

It has been so damn windy and unsettled lately I've been riding my geared commuter / touring bike but tomorrow I think I'll take the Kuwie down for my commute.
I don't expect an apocalypse to happen either but it is supposed to rain a little.

Here's the writeup for making the pannier: click me! (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=415387) Although it's not pictured, I've since made some improvements. I put a stiff board in the back and remounted the pannier hardware at an angle for more heel clearance and to keep the bag from rubbing against the wheel.

My bike itself isn't utilitarian but I guess you could say one of it's main uses is.
Twice a day to and from school 4 miles on very hilly roads.
Still trying to figure out a good gearing for this. Currently 45 x 19

this is what I will be riding to school/work every day come late august. It'll be all white with black pinstriping on the frame joints. Oh, and it won't have that extra saw blade once I get finished with the mini-grinder.
It will be going all winter too. I'm thinking of building a trailer.
