First of all, I remembered my helmet. Didn't think to give a cell number to Colorchange or Samoots. Hard to believe, but at 7:00 there were already more than several people there with bicycles and jerseys, helmets, etc. I did look around and tried riding around the parking lot looking for you guys but...:(
Managed to hang with the Wheeling Wheelmen for a bit in the first leg. Thanks, you guys. But then I blinked, and they were gone. I rode a bit with a guy who mentioned he was fairly new to the sport, and mentioned he had just gotten clipless pedals the night before, so of course I asked him if he had fallen over still clipped in yet. "Not yet". 100 yards further we get to a light, he unclips one...yup, fell over the other direction. The curse of Lord Voldemort! Of course , the dark side has a way of getting even. Heading out on the third leg, I was stopped reading the sign showing which way to turn coming out of the rest stop. Two people stopped next to me. I heard an "ooohhh" and turned just in time to realize the guy was clipped in, falling over , into me, still clipped, taking me down too. I felt like I was in a three stooges scene. I started laughing as I thought about how funny it must have looked to anyone watching, while he apologized profusely. Anyway, finished with a 17mph average with some nasty winds in some areas. For me, that's a good average for 65 miles. I was pretty happy with my ride, overall.:D

Ugh....wish I could have joined you! I really like that ride. I noticed the wind yesterday morning early and figured it was a factor for you at some point.

My legs really were toast though....you had a good ride. Too funny about the Three Stooges scene. That is hysterical.

OK, so this ride was going to be a preparation test for Cylowe's upcoming "double header from hell" as I have never done hard rides back-to-back.:twitchy:

On Saturday, I did my normal club ride with SpinDoctors Cycleworks. We did 50 miles at over 20 mph average. The second half of the ride is pretty hard, 29 miles at 22.6 mph average. It was windy, and I had a head cold so wasn't sure how well I would ride but I did fine so decided to try the 500.

The only reason I haven't posted earlier is because my fingers were too tired to press the keys on the keyboard until this morning. Here's the rundown.

Got there about 6:45 AM. Pretty cool (low 40's and windy again!). Met up with Neitsmas and waited for Voldemort until 7:13 but couldn't find him so we took off. We started at a fairly leisurely pace, about 18mph. The wind was pretty tough but we made it to the first rest stop. I knew I didn’t have much snap in my legs and we were already talking about cutting the ride to 50 miles. We didn’t stop for long and on the way out, another rider asked if he could join us. I said “Glad to find another person to share the work with”. Off we go, a little harder now. After a while, Neits starts to have some problems with a calf/knee and ends up bailing as we happened to be riding right near his house.

So, we kicked the rate up a little bit … over 20 mph now for about 20 miles until the second rest stop. Now I’m really starting to feel it as we got some serious leg burns on the hills and I’m looking forward to the stop. After about 5 minutes, the guy I’m riding with says “I don’t like to stop long for fear of tightening up.” Oh boy, I needed a rest. Anyway … off we go and another rider asks to tag along. He’s even stronger than the last guy and I take my turns with the pulls but am starting to really labor as our pace is still above 20 mph with strong winds.

After trying to hang on for a while, I’m finally off the back:cry: and into the “bonk zone”. I had nothing! The grueling thing was even though I’m going slow now, trying to eat and recover, I’m facing the wind alone. I drop my speed down to 16 mph (only 190 watts) and start to feel a little better. Another group comes along and I try to latch on. Great, these guys are doing 23+mph (270 watts) and I last all of 3 miles. Back into the bonk zone. :notamused:

Now here is where I really blow it. I was really tired and suffering and made a wrong turn and ended up duplicating that leg!:troll: UghhH!@ Boy was I mad. Lost and tired is not good!

I finally find the rest stop again but am feeling better at this point with all the soft pedaling I did. I make a final quick stop and head for the high school only 11 miles away. Finally! Ended up doing 83 miles on a 65 mile ride. Doh!

OK, here is what I learned. Even though I tried to carbo load the night before, I should have gotten up early and eaten a big breakfast. I ran out of fuel! Liquids were fine but I needed food! I will eat much more often next time, and pig out the night before and the morning of the second day. Cold is actually worse today so we'll see how that fairs but today is a REST DAY!

Hey, my ride's only one day! It's completely up to you if you want to ride the route twice...

:innocent:

And you know you gotta eat eat eat before and during the ride! C'mon, man!

Glad to see you made it through both this weekend. :thumb:

JC, this is one tough ride on cue sheets alone. There were tons of turns with many short legs. I would not have enjoyed this ride without the turn signs as I would have had to really concentrate on the street signs. (As it was, I would have enjoyed it much more if they had one more sign on Owen? saying to go straight ;))

colorchange, youre right on that one, i was thinking about mapping it out though that may make it a little better. I also tried to keep up with the wheeling wheelmen but they blew me away on a hill and left me with the wind whippin me in the face.

Ended up doing 83 miles on a 65 mile ride.

So let me get this right. I missed a chance to 1)try to keep up with you and a few others averaging 20+ most of the way, 2)ride twice as far as I'd ridden before Sunday, and 3) get lost and take on some extra hills. Gee, I'm really sorry I missed you guys in the am:rolleyes: (actually I wa sprobably somewhere in line registering when you rolled out).
