It was a great weekend for riding. I knocked off 12 miles on Friday morning before work. Saturday morning I got up and took my 7 year old daughter riding around the neighborhood looking for yard sales. We were trying to find her a bike with 20 inch wheels to replace the 16" that she had way out grown. I told her that she could not have a new one until she learned to ride well without training wheels. She finally did that about a month ago. We ended up riding about 2.5 miles. We gave up and went to Target and I wound up buying her a new Schwinn 24" Mtb. After some brief adjustments she took off on it with no problem.

Our local cycling club does a R.A.M. (Ride a Metric) training series that starts in May and culminates with our big century event in the fall. I found out about it last week and went and joined them Saturday afternoon for a 13 mile ride. We had a couple of new people besides myself, a few club members who enjoyed the slower pace, and a few club instructors. I learned a ton. It is a whole different world riding in a group than the solo rides that I have been doing. We will be riding weekly until the fall, within an increase in distance of about two miles a week, until we hit the Metric Century mark in September.

I got so pumped up from the group ride that I went out and rode 30 miles by myself this afternoon. That beats my previous distance record by about 5 miles. When I got home my daughter was begging to go riding. So, we went out and road 3 miles together around the subdivision. It is amazing how much faster she is on this new bike. She was begging to do more, but I was worn out.

Wait until your doctor notices improvement in your health numbers and your friends start telling you how much thinner you look. Then it gets even more addictive. Still, on days you do not really quite feel like riding you remember how good you feel when you ride and you go for a ride, anyway.

I had my annual aviation physical three weeks ago. It really annoyed me that my doctor did not notice that I had lost 40 pounds at that point. Oh well, he passed me for another year. I started to get the compliments from friends after about 30 pounds off. Now I am getting the "maybe I should get my bike out of the garage" comments. I am down 46 pounds since January 1.

Your doctor might be used to large swings in weight for you and other large patients, and is simply discounting it. If so, you should seek a new physician. 40 pounds lost is great!

I am sorry. I should have explained better. This was annual physical for work. This is not my regular physician. Although I have seen this doctor for several years now, it is only for the one physical each year. He had just told me last year that he wanted me to lose some weight before I came back this year. My regular physician would have definitely noticed. She has been fussing at me for years to lose some weight.

That explains it. He's just rubber stamping you as fit to fly. Ignore him. You are doing great, and I'm proud of you.
