General Cycling Discussion - Music for Race Event

I'm trying to find a few pieces of music that might be used at the start of a cycle racing event. I need something that builds anticipation as the race is about to start. It'll be a sort of theme song for the event.

Any ideas?

You can get John Tesh's "Tour de France" album he did in 1988. I'm telling you, John rocks! That's a great album that builds up the anticipation and all- very inspiring, and it was pretty popular in Europe for that 1988 Tour.

I'm not sure about locally, but if you can get to the Borders website or some other music website, you can order it there.

I ended up going around to all the used cd stores and I found a used copy some fool threw out. Wow! What a find!

I guess you could try the "Chariots of Fire" cd too- it may work for you too.

If I can think of anything else in my repitoire, I'll let you know.

Whoa- just remembered there's a song that counts down from 10 to 1, then gives this high energy beat song you can use for a race ride. I heard them play it at a spinning convention in Italy. I will try really hard to remember the group or ask my instructor friends. It's great... the guy counts down slowly, then when he gets to 1, there's this explosion of music that's just freakin' awesome... if anyone knows it, they should pipe in and give up the name of the group and/or the name of the song.

Ignoring themes, my criteria for pre-race music is simple: the beat must be as fast as my pulse. Anger is also a plus.

I put the word out for that song with the countdown- I'll get it to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, just go to borders.com and type in the Tour de France 1988 album or John Tesh and just listen to a sample of the music.

Yeah, John Tesh bites... especially now that he feels like he can sing too. But his early stuff was good... I mean really good. Unfortunately, the later work he did is so bad that it overshadows the good stuff he did back when he first quit ET and went out to Europe to strike up his fortune. That Christian stuff doesn't suit me either. :-/

Now Antiloop is out of Sweden, and some of the best techno/electonica stuff I've ever heard. That Believe song gets people jumping out of their skin with anticipation when we are doing sprints and stuff like that. I really like the Jock Jams stuff- that fourth album just really rocked for me- and I liked using the Austin Powers with the 2 Unlimited song that blends in right after the "Yeah Baby" interlude. Hoku is a great group- Perfect Day is great, except that it was used for the Legally Blonde soundtrack, so some folks may view it as a girlie song. However, when played by itself, it's a great, fast song that's really upbeat. Eminem is not a fast song, but it's a great background filler. Orbital has a great song with The Box- the music builds, then becomes very loud, then ends suddenly very quietly with the last few beats. My class loves it. The Propellerheads song is awesome. It has that hard edge that is just really driving and if you can get the long version, all the better. Jamiroquai is just a fast song- I like the "Canned Heat" verses- like you are just getting ready to explode out of the starting gate or something, and the long version is really good too. Basement Jaxx is not really as obvious- it's like salsa/techno/dance stuff that's really good- gets loud right away, has a quiet part in the middle,then builds back up to being really loud at the end. Coldplay is quiet, but I like that it's just one long, calm song that has a nice beat. Yello is just really fast and has a nice "starting gate" kind of feel to it. Finally... YES! It starts quiet, but then after 3 minutes, suddenly it just goes off like BAM! and it gets fast and loud to the end. I love that song- sometimes I end class with this song. It's an oldie, but a goodie.

You need the Manic Street Preachers CD entitled "Know Your Enemy" (it's the one with the words "Manic Street Preachers Know Your Enemy" inscribed in large, not-so-friendly letters on it's cover). You're looking for track 3 - "Introvenous Agnostic". You might also think about "Freedom of Speech Won't Feed my Children" from the same CD.

Such a great song!! Takes me back to the days when I was 19 and would listen to that song(and whole record)sitting in my new Renault Le Car enjoying some herbal refreshment in the parking lot of the supermarket I stocked shelves at... such a great way to get my game on before placing endless amounts of diapers, canned goods, etc on shelves all night long.

Since the movie "Breaking Away" I can't hear Mendelssohn's "Italian Symphony" without thinking of bicycle racing.

Wasn't that movie just THE worst?? I remember thinking that the whole Kevin Bacon scenario-the hip, huge loft, the eye-candy girlfriend, the ex-Wall St. trader thing-was complete and utter jive.

I saw it on HBO back when it was considered a new movie and rented it about 3 years ago again to check myself and see if it or me had changed... my wife and me just laughed our butts off watching it.

Plus, I must say Jamie Gertz acts just slightly more convincing than cardboard.

Just keep in mind that whatever you play may seep into the participants' heads and stick there. For instance, I once ran an entire marathon with a Britney Spears song lodged in my cranium because they were playing it at the start. I don't know what was more painful, 3+ hours of running or 3+ hours of "I'm not that innocent..." going through the brain...

I seriously would have bashed the dj's head in if I ever spent any amount of time fixating over any Britney Spears song.

Next time that happens, go on ahead and put on some spiked boots and stomp him like a bug! :D

Seriously, that is very true. I remember one of those quirky news reports when they said the last song you hear is the one you usually remember throughout the day, no matter if you hated it or liked it. So be careful- you could seriously affect someone's performance with bad music!
