It lets you know when your friends are online
Really thats it, We used to have, or were looking into, a vbulletin chat program (if I remember right) and this would have worked with it to let you know who was available. I don't know if vbulletin still has the plugin (I doubt it, the resources would have been nuts) but the buddy option is really just fluff.
It might also highlight posts by them or would have moved them higher up in the search relevance in the old search engine, but I forget.
If you add a buddy, and then look at the "whos online" listing at the bottom, they should have a small * beside their name to represent they are your friend :hug: :D
