** EDIT: Date Changed to MONDAY 5/26 (Memorial Day) **

Ruth and I want one more climbing ride before Sequoia (in 2 weeks).

So... We are going to ride the tandem up Mt. Hamilton (not via Quimby this time around.... Sorry Ramon ;) )

I don't think I am going to go over and do the back side at all... Just to the top and back. However, others can ride over the top to the bridge and back, etc...

Any takers?

The new crankset I got is known to need re-tightening after the first few miles. So I will be checking that probably after the 1st and 2nd mini descents on the way up, and at the top. Have to make sure this stuff is all in order for Sequoia. :thumb:

Start time 10:15 at the School we always start at.

We will taking caltrain down from San Mateo, arrives in SJ at 9:36. We will ride the 6 miles to the school from the train station, so figure 30 mins for that.

If others want start more like 9:15 or 9:30, we could drive, but prefer to drive as little as possible.

We should not start before 9 AM, because (1) I wont be there on-time and (2) The last wave for the Hamilton Challenge takes off at 8:55 am.

LIST (thus far)
1) Marco & Ruth (tandem)
2) Ramon (Fuso)
3) Pete
4) Tim

9am PST or MTZ (Marco time zone.. ;) ) I should be around. Might be a good time to try it on the fixed gear.

PDT get it right

Maybe I am on on PST so when it's 9 on my time, it's 10 for everyone else. ;)

I'll be there, but doing the race that starts in San Jose and finishes near Livermore.
(Race starts at 8AM in waves 10 minutes apart - I go at 8:10 with the 35+)

I rode the climb on Saturday at around noon over the top down to Isabel Creek and back. I think it was close to 100 degrees at Isabel Creek, but much cooler at the top (and thankfully there was water available). It was the first time I ever climbed the back side and it was pretty steep.

I'm really looking forward to the race on Sunday.

OH Damn!!! I forgot about the Hamilton Classic. I actually wanted to do it... But Cat 5 was full.

I'm going to try an start at around 9:30 so Ruth and I don't humiliate any unsuspecting M40+ 1/2/3 (8:55 start time) with our tandem :p

OK... back to reality :D

Good luck to all the racers!

Can switch to Monday (Memorial Day, if it suits more participants....)

Actually, that might be good, since Ruth and I are thinking of going out to downtown on Saturday night.

I think I'm in. Never done Hamilton before so this'll be a good chance. Sun. or Mon. both work. If Sunday I'll be on the 9:36 Caltrain also.

fyi - tandems are not allowed on Caltrain.

fyi - tandems are not allowed on Caltrain.

I am aware of this, since I take it everyday for work. However, I think it will be OK on the weekend, since the demand for bike space is next to nothing. Especially in the SB direction.

If we get denied, I will just ride back to my house, and take the tandem in the car. :(

I am 99% sure, I won't get any crap.

If I get denied NB travel, I will just ride home.

Wasn't Memorial Day last year the first time we had a NorCal Group ride?

fyi - there is a slow paced Western Wheelers club ride going up Mt. Hamilton on Memorial Day. They welcome guests, but you will be asked to sign a liability release. See the Western Wheeler's web site for their ride schedule: www.westernwheelers.org

Mt. Hamilton is a very long climb, but never steep (around 5% for 20 miles). Most people take 2 to 3 hours for the climb. There is very little shade, but temperatures should be mild this weekend. On a clear day, you can get great views from the top.

I'll bring the Fuso. Might as well get as much time on it as possible before the 112 mile ride.

I suppose I could mark off Hamilton from "stuff I've never done".

How long a ride are we talking, altogether? And where's the school?

The last section is a bit steeper around 8% or so I think. Still not too steep, just long. However, the 2 descents break up the climbing, and will allow for some recovery.

Tentatively in. I haven't done Hamilton since 2000, and goodness knows I need the climbing work. I vote for Monday, too.

Okay, question.. I think it was asked earlier, .. what pace are you guys looking to climb at? My wife is a weekend rider, but I think she can handle the ride, what is the consensus on this one, average rider rideable? I think yes, but she's looking for other opinions.

Doable, but hopefully you or someone else will go at her pace.

Hamilton is a long climb, but not too steep. So, it won't be so hard that the average rider will run out of gears (as long as they have reasonable low gearing). However the length of the climb will spread out the field quite a bit.

Being, a climb there is no real group pace, but rather certain smaller groups or pairs of people that will share a similar pace, and urge each other on.

I'm still not positive I'll make it, but if I'm there I'll be treating it as a recovery ride - looking to keep the heart rate low:rolleyes: Seriously, I'll be sore after the Sunday ride (Mt. D, Morgan Territory and Patterson Pass), so I'll be taking it easy.

LOL - I'm still somewhat at the mercy of my ex. - she hasn't confirmed what time she's dropping off the kids!

You can still ride Quimby and meet up @ Grant Ranch.

Ty.S, I'm thinking about this one as well; I asked #1 son if he wants to take the tandem out so he's thinking about it. In either case, if I go, your wife'll have some company. 'Did the Sunrise ride out in Lodi this weekend so I know the value of having someone to ride with. Definitely have her come out because Hamilton's not a steep climb, just long.

I'm in.

It was my first real climb since I got back into cycling (last month).. other than one run up Page Mill. First ascent took 2h19. I'm hoping to come in under 2 this time. Not a bad climb at all. Sure, it's long, but totally doable. Didn't even bother to stop for a break on the way up last time.

I've got a rack that can hold two more bikes, and a car that can hold 3 more people. :) Anyone who gets to my house by 8:15 can ride with me.
